1. PAGES 6th OSM and 4th YSM postponed until May 2022
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent large uncertainties on health, travel restrictions and the economic crisis, PAGES and the Local Organizers of the 6th Open Science Meeting (OSM) and 4th Young Scientists Meeting (YSM), planned for 16-22 May 2021 in Agadir, Morocco, have made the decision to postpone the events until May 2022. The situation will be re-assessed mid-2021 before a final decision is made.
We know this may be disappointing, as many were looking forward to this opportunity for face-to-face networking and the development of personal contacts that these meetings, which only take place every four years, provide to the participants: it goes well beyond the sharing of scientific content. This is why we believe that postponing the meeting is the best decision to be made at this time.

2. Share your PAGES' memories for our 30th anniversary
As part of the celebrations for our 30th anniversary, a special issue of Past Global Changes Magazine will be published in May 2021. Would you like to share a story? We're calling on current and past working group members, working group leaders, SSC, EXCOM and ECN members, guest scientists, and workshop attendees to contribute.
Please send a short text (max 100 words) and, if you wish, an accompanying photo with caption (preferably at least 300 dpi) about a particularly memorable or funny experience with PAGES to pages@pages.unibe.ch by 30 October, using the subject line "30th anniversary contribution". Alternatively, you can also just send a photo and caption. Please make sure any identifiable people in the photos have given their permission.
We look forward to showcasing your stories and images in the magazine and on a dedicated 30th anniversary page on PAGES' website.
3. PAGES and ECN webinars in October
i. PAGES
The 3rd PAGES webinar will be held in conjunction with Neotoma on 15 October from 16:00-17:30 UTC. Presenter Jack Williams will give an overview of the Neotoma Paleoecology Database, its mission, key features of its data model, its software ecosystem, growth trends and other recent developments, research and educational partnerships, and data governance. After Jack's presentation, there will be a Q&A session. The webinar will also be recorded and made available shortly afterwards on PAGES' YouTube Channel. ii. ECN
Engaging in international collaborations can prove challenging, especially for early-career researchers. PAGES Early-Career Network (ECN) and PAGES Co-Chair Mike Evans will present a webinar on 13 October at 14:00 UTC to talk about this topic, especially with regards to starting and managing a PAGES working group. 4. PAGES website upgrade
Over the past months, PAGES IPO has been working with a developer to create a more modern website. Working groups will be easier to find, and the "rabbit hole" of clicks will be shortened. You will still be able to find news, job announcements, and all papers easily, but some of the very old information will no longer be available. We hope to have the website live by the end of the year, and we'll keep you updated! Any questions can be sent to pages@pages.unibe.ch using the subject line "Website upgrade enquiry".

a. CoralHydro2k project:
Abstract submission extended to 15 October for the 14th International Coral Reef Symposium to be held online as well as in Bremen, Germany, from 18-23 July 2021. CoralHydro2k leaders encourage you to submit to the group's session "Can large-scale ocean and climate reconstructions from corals improve our understanding of past, present, and future extremes?". b. CLIVASH2k project:
Group leaders announce a new community data call to expand the current PAGES 2k database by compiling a database of chemistry from Antarctic ice cores and possibly other archives spanning the past 2k. c. Iso2k project:
Group leaders thank all involved in the publication of the paper "The Iso2k database: a global compilation of paleo-δ18O and δ2H records to aid understanding of Common Era climate." The database is the first global-scale collection of water isotope proxy records from multiple types of geological and biological archives. See point 8 for all details.
d. The AGU Fall Meeting session "Climate of the Common Era", which was previously run by 2k Network members for more than 10 years, continues! See point 9 for all details.
e. 2k Network leaders have proposed the session "Studying the climate of the last two millennia" at the 2021 EGU. See point 9 for all details.
iii. Carbon in Peat on EArth through Time (C-PEAT)
a. The deadline for submission of charcoal data to the HOLOPEATFIRE project has been extended to 30 November. If you have any charcoal data from a peatland with an associated chronology and would like to be involved in the project, please contact Graeme Swindles. b. The group is involved in two sessions at the AGU Fall Meeting in December. See point 9 for all details.
c. The joint PAGES-INQUA workshop on tropical peatland processes and ecosystem services will be held in Bangkok, Thailand, in March 2021. See point 10 for all details.
iv. Climate Reconstruction and Impacts from the Archives of Societies (CRIAS)
a. The group's third workshop will be held from 19-20 March 2021 in Hong Kong, and also online. The abstract submission deadline is 30 October. See point 10 for all details.
b. Interested researchers are encouraged to offer reviews or submit relevant manuscripts for the Climate of the Past special issue "International methods and comparisons in climate reconstruction and impacts from archives of societies." For those of you who proposed manuscripts, note that the closing date is still April 2021 but earlier submissions would be much appreciated. vi. Climate Variability Across Scales (CVAS)
a. The final CVAS seminar series events will be held on 8 and 22 October. The series aims to provide an overview of the current state of the research relevant to the CVAS community in order to identify starting points for collaborative projects. b. The workshop "Beyond Palaeoclimate Ping Pong: Improving estimates of past climate variability by consistent data-model comparison" will be held from 3-6 December in Heidelberg, Germany, and also online. See point 10 for all details.
vii. Resistance, Recovery and Resilience in Long-term Ecological Systems (EcoRe3)
The new paper "Equilibrium in plant functional trait responses to warming is stronger under higher climate variability during the Holocene", resulting from the group's 2018 workshop, has been published in Global Ecology and Biogeography. See point 8 for all details.
viii. LandCover6k
a. LandCover6k has an abstract accepted at the PMIP Conference in Nanjing (virtual and on site) from 26-30 October 2020. Marie-José Gaillard will give an online presentation on the LandCover6k products and strategies. See point 12 for all details about joining the PMIP Conference.
b. The group's 4th General Workshop, planned for 9-10 October 2020, is postponed until a future date. Given current circumstances, the organizers at the University of Pennsylvania, USA, are assessing the possibility of holding the workshop in 2021 based on university reopening and governmental safety guidelines. ix. PALeo constraints on SEA level rise (PALSEA)
a. A new paper stemming from the group's annual meeting in 2019 explores how the Last Interglacial (a warm climate period ~125,000 years ago) could help improve sea-level rise projections over the next 100 years. See point 8 for all details.
b. The Evan Gowan et al. paper "Last interglacial (MIS 5e) sea-level proxies in southeastern South America" is open for discussion in Earth System Science Data until 5 November: https://doi.org/10.5194/essd-2020-247
c. The group will conduct a joint session with QUIGS at the AGU Fall Meeting in December. See point 9 for all details.
x. PalEOclimate and the PeopLing of the Earth (PEOPLE 3000)
The "Understanding long-term human-environment feedback loops through the integration of archaeology, paleoclimate and ecological models" workshop in Arica, Chile, has been postponed. Potential new dates could be in January or March 2021. See point 10 for all details.
xi. PAGES-PMIP Working Group on Quaternary Interglacials (QUIGS)
a. Registration will open soon for the virtual QUIGS-IFG meeting on glacial terminations to be held on 10 and 12 November 2020. See point 10 for all details.
b. The original September 2020 workshop in Cassis, France, has been postponed until 21-23 Sepember 2021. See point 10 for all details.
c. The group will conduct a joint session with PALSEA at the AGU Fall Meeting in December. See point 9 for all details.
xii. Volcanic Impacts on Climate and Society (VICS)
a. Group leaders have proposed the session "Understanding volcano-climate impacts and the stratospheric aerosol layer" at the 2021 EGU. See point 9 for all details.
b. The next VICS workshop will be held from 8-10 March 2021 online and in Aarhus, Denmark. On-site participants can interact with an exhibition on volcanism and society at the Moesgård Museum. See point 10 for all details.
7. PAGES Early-Career Network (ECN) updates
i. New publications
The ECN's first peer-reviewed science article has been published in the journal Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science and a new The Early Pages Blog post is now available. See point 8 for all details.
ii. GSA Annual Meeting 2020

Registration opens 23 October for the virtual "Past Socio-Environmental Systems" workshop (vPASES2020), jointly organized by PAGES ECN and INQUA ECR, from 9-11 November 2020. This workshop will plant the seed for the postponed in-person PASES workshop next year in Chile. Keynote speakers are Cesar Mendez and Yoshi Maezumi. Registration is free and open to all. i. 2k Network - Iso2k project
The Iso2k database description paper is now available in Earth System Science Data. Bronwen Konecky et al. present this global compilation of previously published datasets from a variety of natural archives that record the stable oxygen (δ18O) or hydrogen (δ2H) isotopic compositions of environmental waters, which reflect hydroclimate changes over the CE. The Iso2k database contains 759 isotope records from the terrestrial and marine realms: http://pastglobalchanges.org/products/13111
ii. ECN
a. Tamara Trofimova et al. published the ECN's first peer-reviewed paper, titled "Fundamental questions and applications of sclerochronology: Community-defined research priorities" in Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science. Antarctic melting is a major potential contributor to sea-level rise this century, but there are large uncertainties as to how fast and how much sea-level rise Antartica could contribute. 9. AGU Fall Meeting 2020 and EGU General Assembly 2021 updates
i. AGU 2020
The AGU Fall Meeting will be held online and in San Francisco, USA, in December 2020. Content will include real-time sessions, networking opportunities and poster hall time. With all of this content, the Fall Meeting will be concentrated from 7-11 December and events will be extended around the meeting from 1-17 December. There will be recorded sessions so you can watch at your convenience. Convergent themes including global science policy, data, natural hazards, and climate science will be prominently featured. i. Two new endorsed groups
PAGES is pleased to announce its affiliation with two new groups:
a. The International Paleofire Network (IPN) has been created to continue the work of PAGES' Global Paleofire Working Group 2 (GPWG2), which sunsetted in December 2019. IPN, which will run until 2030, is dedicated to paleofire science promotion and to paleofire open-access database management and development: http://pastglobalchanges.org/science/end-aff/ipn
b. The H2020 Innovative Training Network on Deep icE corE Proxies to Infer past antarctiC climatE dynamics (DEEPICE) will run from 2021 to 2025, a period of exciting times and challenges for the European ice-core community, as part of the Beyond EPICA oldest ice core project. Participants in DEEPICE will also work on a future issue of Past Global Changes Magazine: http://pastglobalchanges.org/science/end-aff/deepice
ii. CarpClim
a. The PAGES-endorsed Carpathian Climate and Environment Working Group (CarpClim) workshop, planned for 31 August to 4 September 2020, has been postponed until 2021. The program remains the same and the new dates will be announced as soon as possible. See point 11 for all details.
b. An open-air laboratory has been established in the Carpathians at the Carpathian Interdisciplinary Research Center (CIRC): http://geoconcept.ro/circ/. CarpClim leaders are looking to collect secondhand (or over used) lab and field equipment from partners in Europe. The equipment should still be functional but not used anymore (old fashioned, not updated, needing repair, etc). Shipping would be paid for by CIRC. iii. IPICS
The PAGES-supported 3rd International Partnership in Ice Core Sciences (IPICS) Open Science Conference scheduled for 18-23 October 2020 in Crans Montana, Switzerland, will now be held from 10-15 October 2021. See point 11 for all details.
iv. PMIP
a. The new PMIP paper "Large-scale features and evaluation of the PMIP4-CMIP6 midHolocene simulations" is available in Climate of the Past: https://doi.org/10.5194/cp-16-1847-2020
b. The PMIP 2020 Conference will be held virtually and in Nanjing, China, from 26-30 October 2020. Registration is open and free for participants joining virtually. iii. Collaborative Research Action (CRA) funding call on Transdisciplinary Research for Pathways to Sustainability
On 23 July 2020, the Belmont Forum officially launched a Collaborative Research Action (CRA) funding call on Transdisciplinary Research for Pathways to Sustainability. The call focuses on supporting transdisciplinary networks to innovate solutions and/or synthesize positive and negative inter-linkages across the SDGs, which will contribute to the co-design of sustainable development pathways. i. New climate variability paper

ii. The Micropalaeontological Society (TMS)

iii. 2020 WDS Data Stewardship Award
The Call for Nominations for the 2020 WDS Data Stewardship Award closes 30 October. This annual prize celebrates the exceptional contributions of early-career researchers (ECRs) to the improvement of scientific data stewardship through their (1) engagement with the community, (2) academic achievements, and (3) innovations. Nominations are open to any scientific organization, group, body, union, or otherwise. v. Seminar series "Past answers to current concerns: Approaches to understanding historical societal resilience"
The inaugural seminar series (via Zoom) of the Environmental History Lab at Princeton University, which runs for six weeks starting 6 October, is presented by the Princeton Climate Change and History Research Initiative in collaboration with the Program in Medieval Studies. The presentations are open to the public. Seminars will occur on Tuesdays starting at 13:30 EST. Each set of papers will be followed by a Q&A session of 30 minutes, after which the public section will close and a specialist project-team discussion will follow.
