1. PAGES SSC updates and call for new members
a. At the end of 2020, PAGES says goodbye and thank you to two very active members of the Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) and Executive Committee (EXCOM).
Darrell Kaufman has been a data advocate, leading the PAGES Data Stewardship Integrative Activity, and shining a light on issues of data storage and accessibility. Blas Valero-Garcés was the mastermind (with his team) behind PAGES' 5th Open Science Meeting and 3rd Young Scientists Meeting in Spain in 2017, as well as leading the Extremes Integrative Activity. PAGES is indebted to both for their service to PAGES and the paleoscience community.
We also extend our thanks and well wishes to Stella Alexandroff, who was the first PAGES Early-Career Network (ECN) representative on the SSC. After the creation of the ECN, Stella led the way for the integration of the ECN into the broader PAGES decision-making process and provided valuable input into the future of PAGES from an early-career-researcher perspective. We thank her for serving as the ECN SSC member for two years.
All three outgoing SSC members will continue to be involved in PAGES activities in various ways.
b. In January 2021, five new members join the SSC: Eugenia Ferrero, Aixue Hu, Keely Mills, Pradeep Srivastava, and ECN representative Tamara Trofimova. PAGES welcomes them to the committee and looks forward to their contributions.
c. Would you like to be a member of the SSC and contribute to PAGES' activities? Applications are due 2 April 2021 for the term starting in January 2022. The term runs for three to six years. All details: http://pastglobalchanges.org/about/structure/scientific-steering-committee/apply
2. Deadline extended for 30th anniversary memories
Did you miss the previous deadline for contributions asking for memories and funny moments? There is still a chance to share your stories. The deadline for contributions has been extended to 31 January 2021.
As part of the celebrations for our 30th anniversary, a special issue of Past Global Changes Magazine will be published in mid-2021. We're calling on current and past working group members, working group leaders, SSC, EXCOM and ECN members, guest scientists, and workshop attendees to contribute.
Please send a short text (max. 100 words) and, if you wish, an accompanying photo with caption (preferably at least 300 dpi) about a particularly memorable or funny experience with PAGES to pages
pages.unibe.ch (pages[at]pages[dot]unibe[dot]ch), using the subject line "30th anniversary contribution". Alternatively, you can also just send a photo and caption. Please make sure any identifiable people in the photos have given their permission.
We look forward to showcasing your stories and images in the magazine and on a dedicated 30th anniversary page on PAGES' website.

Historical climatology is the interdisciplinary research field that reconstructs past climates and weather and their societal impacts on the basis of written and physical records produced by people.
This issue of Past Global Changes Magazine presents papers on the current state of research in several world regions, as well as on new methods and the analysis of new sources in the field. It is a product of the PAGES Climate Reconstruction and Impacts from the Archives of Societies (CRIAS) working group: http://pastglobalchanges.org/crias

4. Have your say in the PAGES Survey - deadline 14 February
This survey intends to collect suggestions from the paleo community regarding PAGES' activities in the coming years. It consists of three sections – About you, PAGES' priorities, and what PAGES can do for you – and should take about 10 minutes to complete. The survey is anonymous, and the results will be presented in the 30th anniversary magazine issue. b. Group leader Juan Ballesteros recently presented "Deciphering past flood disaster in high mountain regions based on tree-ring records" as part of the Bath Spa University's Hazard, Risk and Disaster Research Seminar Series 2020-21. See point 8 for all details.

x. PALeo constraints on SEA level rise (PALSEA): http://pastglobalchanges.org/palsea
a. The group held a joint session with QUIGS at the AGU Fall Meeting on 8 and 9 December.
b. A long-term PALSEA goal is to create standardized sea-level databases. In 2019, they achieved a milestone goal thanks to the work of Nicole Khan and the HOLSEA community. For the Holocene, there is now a series of regional databases compiled using a unique framework: http://pastglobalchanges.org/products/special-issues/12887. A similar goal for the Last Interglacial is being pursued via the European Research Council led by group leader Alessio Rovere, in close collaboration with PALSEA. Several authors are compiling data into the World Atlas of Last Interglacial Shorelines, and a special issue of Earth System Science Data is underway: https://essd.copernicus.org/articles/special_issue1055.html. The journal follows a discussion forum format, therefore anyone is free to read the preprints and leave comments.

The "Understanding long-term human-environment feedback loops through the integration of archaeology, paleoclimate and ecological models" workshop originally planned to be held in Arica, Chile, will be held online in March 2021, with an in-person meeting later in the year. 7. PAGES Early-Career Network (ECN) updates
i. vPASES post-workshop information
a. Organizers are thankful to all presenters, keynote speakers and the 240 attendees for a fruitful and inspiring three-day online workshop in November which touched on a wide range of paleoscience and socio-environmental topics. An average of 100 participants from different parts of the world tuned in each day.
b. In an attempt to find ways this community-driven workshop can maintain momentum and to continue to serve ECRs in the months leading up to the in-person workshop next year, organizers encourage you to complete the feedback form. It takes 5-7 minutes to fill in and closes on 10 December. Dharma A. a. The PAGES-endorsed Carpathian Climate and Environment Working Group (CarpClim) workshop will now be held in 2021. The program remains the same and the new dates will be announced as soon as possible. See point 11 for all details.
b. An open-air laboratory has been established in the Carpathians at the Carpathian Interdisciplinary Research Center (CIRC): http://geoconcept.ro/circ/. CarpClim leaders are looking to collect secondhand (or over used) lab and field equipment from partners in Europe. The equipment should still be functional but not used anymore (old fashioned, not updated, needing repair, etc). Shipping would be paid for by CIRC. ii. Historical Climatology

iii. IPICS
The PAGES-supported 3rd International Partnership in Ice Core Sciences (IPICS) Open Science Conference scheduled for 18-23 October 2020 in Crans Montana, Switzerland, will now be held from 10-15 October 2021. See point 11 for all details.
iv. Varves Working Group (VWG)
a. Submit an abstract to the group's vEGU21: Gather Online session "Geochronological tools for environmental reconstructions" which is co-sponsored by PAGES. See point 9 for all details.
b. The Varves Working Group has started an online seminar series to maintain and stimulate discussion within the varve community in the absence of meeting at conferences. New presentations will be announced soon. See point 11 for general details.
13. Future Earth updates
i. Knowledge Action Network on Emergent Risks and Extreme Events
This group will hold the session "Learning from the past? The role of extreme events and natural hazards in the human past" at the EGU Online General Assembly "vEGU21: Gather Online" from 19-30 April 2021. This session might resonate with many in the PAGES community and conveners encourage abstract submissions. See point 9 for all details about vEGU21.
ii. Sustainability Research and Innovation Congress (SRI2021)
a. Submit a session proposal in English by 15 December. Diverse, innovative, inter- and transdisciplinary proposals offering fresh perspectives to sustainability to further enrich the Congress program are invited to join the almost 100 sessions already accepted in the SRI2020 call for session proposals. Session proposals in Japanese, Mandarin, French and Spanish will be accepted until 1 January 2021. Registration is now also open. See point 11 for all details.
b. The call is launched to host SRI2022. Hosting SRI2022 is a unique opportunity for networks, universities, research institutions, government agencies, corporations, granting agencies, professional societies, non-profit organizations and other change-makers in sustainability aspiring to strengthen their global profile and thought leadership. 15. IPCC AR6 updates
i. Review the IPCC AR6 SOD WGII
The second order draft of the Working Group II contribution to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report Climate Change 2021: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability is now open for expert review until 29 January 2021. The government and expert review of the SOD is a key element of the IPCC assessment process. The purpose of this review is to help ensure that the report provides a balanced and comprehensive assessment of the latest scientific findings.

ii. New IPCC AR6 WGI deadline
The IPCC Executive Committee has reviewed changes to the Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) strategic planning schedule. Among other changes, the IPCC has extended the cut-off date for scientific literature to be included in the contribution of the AR6 of Working Group I to 31 January 2021. vii. Tropical Climate Variability and Coral Reefs – A Past to Future Perspective on Current Rates of Change at Ultra-High Resolution
This is a six-year research program funded by the German Research Foundation. PAGES' CoralHydro2k project leader Thomas Felis will be the coordinator for the first three-year funding period and Miriam Pfeiffer will coordinate the final three years. The project is expected to announce an international call for PhD and Postdoc positions in the second half of 2021.
