1. Call for 6th OSM session proposals - deadline 1 April
PAGES' premier science conferences, the Open Science Meeting (OSM) and Young Scientists Meeting (YSM), are held every four years. The 6th OSM and 4th YSM will be held in Agadir, Morocco, from 16-22 May 2021. The YSM will be held from 16-18 May and the OSM from 18-22 May. Regional field trips and excursions of varying durations will be offered after the OSM: http://pages-osm.org
The Scientific Program Committee (SPC) invites you to take an active part in organizing the scientific program of the conference. The program will be comprised of plenary, parallel and poster sessions.
The plenary sessions will host keynote talks intended to stimulate discussions on the role of past global change science by providing information about strategies for a sustainable world, on the engagement of stakeholders in active cutting-edge research, and on the added value of interdisciplinary approaches. The parallel and associated poster sessions will accommodate top-level ongoing research. Up to five sessions will be run in parallel at the OSM, allowing accommodation of a total of 40 sessions.
The SPC will prepare the program based upon your input, aiming for a fair balance between the topics. Please note that the SPC could merge sessions with similar topics (before abstract submission) or with a small number of abstracts (after abstract submission).
Scientists from African institutions are strongly encouraged to submit session proposals. Please inform your colleagues about this opportunity.
Email your proposals until 1 April 2020 to pages@pages.unibe.ch, using the subject line "Call for sessions - PAGES OSM 2021". Please include a provisional title, potential conveners, and a brief description of the session.

2. IPCC WG1 Second-Order Draft open for review
The Second-Order Draft (SOD) of the Working Group 1 (WG1) contribution to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) sixth assessment report (AR6) is now open for review.
To facilitate a robust review of the paleoscience information, which is integrated throughout the report, a comprehensive list of the paleoscience contents is now available. To review the report, register with the IPCC before 19 April 2020 and submit reviews by 26 April. The paleoscience content list was assembled by PAGES SSC Member Darrell Kaufman with help from members of PAGES' Early-Career Network (ECN) and students at Northern Arizona University, USA. Community feedback is needed to focus the key messages from paleosciences and to assure that the report presents the most current, comprehensive, and balanced treatment of the policy-relevant topics.

b. Iso2k: The Iso2k project of the 2k Network has a paper open for discussion in Earth System Science Data. See point 6 for all details.
iii. ACME: In light of the current COVID-19 situation, the first ACME workshop, which was supposed to take place 1-2 May prior to EGU 2020, has been cancelled. Organizers are currently working on alternative plans and will make further announcements as soon as they know more. See point 8 for all details.
iv. C-PEAT: a. May 2020 Meeting Update: Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the workshop committee has decided to cancel the meeting in May 2020 and reschedule it for a later date. Further information will be provided as soon as possible. b. GSA 2020 Annual Meeting: Please consider submitting a paper to the following session - T153. Soils and Long-Term Environmental Change. GSA will be held from 25-28 October 2020 in Montreal, QC, Canada. The electronic abstract-submission form opens 1 April. This session integrates soils and environmental change across disciplines and methods from pedology to remote sensing, geochemistry, geomorphology, paleoecology, and archaeology. Studies could include carbon sequestration, anthropogenic impacts, soil formation over time, and soil geoarchaeology. vi. CVAS: a. Register by 31 March for the CVAS workshop "Beyond Palaeoclimate Ping Pong: Improving estimates of past climate variability by consistent data-model comparison" from 2-5 June 2020 in Heidelberg, Germany. See point 8 for all details.
b. A new review paper on the group's activity has been accepted in Reviews of Geophysics. See point 6 for all details.
vii. EcoRe3: The group's final workshop, scheduled for this week in Cape Town, South Africa, has been cancelled. See point 8 for all details.
viii. LandCover6k: a. Sandy Harrison et al. present the overall strategy of LandCover6k, plus the products and their current and potential use, in a new paper in Geoscientific Model Development, which is a contribution to the group's special issue "Paleoclimate Modelling Intercomparison Project phase 4 (PMIP4)". See point 6 for all details.
b. Qiuchi Wan et al. test the application of the widely-used Extended R-Value (ERV) model in the tropical secondary and planted woodlands of Hainan Island, China, to estimate relative pollen productivities for common plant taxa occurring as pollen in surface and fossil samples of the region in their Ecological Indicators paper. c. A land-use mapping workshop for South and Southeast Asia will be held at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA, on 9 May 2020. See point 8 for all details.
d. The group will hold the session "Quantitative reconstruction of Holocene land-use and land-cover change: advances and applications" at the joint 15th International Palynological Congress (IPCXV 2020) and the 11th International Organisation of Palaeobotany Conference (IOPC-XI 2020) from 12-19 September 2020 in Prague, Czech Republic. PEOPLE 3000: The May 2020 meeting has been postponed due to the evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic and the organizing committee has decided to tentatively reschedule the workshop to ensure the safety of participants. It is planned to take place 31 August to 5 September 2020. See point 8 for all details.
xii. QUIGS: The next workshop will be held in September 2020 in Cassis, France. PAGES has provided some financial support. See point 8 for all details.
xiii. SISAL: a. A paper about the second version of the SISAL database is open for discussion until 8 May. See point 6 for all details.

5. PAGES Early-Career Network updates
i. The official website is now live for the joint PAGES-INQUA ECR workshop "Past Socio-Environmental Systems (PASES)" to be held from 9-13 November 2020 in La Serena y Coquimbo, Chile. Abstract submission and grant requests open 23 March. See point 8 for all details.
ii. Call for webinar organizers and speakers: The ECN has plans to host a webinar on the topic "How to apply for academic jobs". If you have ideas on how it should be organized and/or who to invite for speaker(s), please volunteer to join the organizing team! This is an opportunity to be more involved with PAGES ECN, advance your professional development and networking skills, and get connected if you are currently on the job market yourself. Or do you want to be a speaker? The ECN would also like to hear from people with extensive experience in applying for jobs or hiring people for any kind of position in academia. This webinar will be a friendly interaction and a great help to early-career researchers with their (future) job hunts. Please email webinar.pages.ecn@gmail.com for more information.

b. The Early Pages is a blog by and about ECRs in paleoscience, created to enhance the visibility of ECRs and to communicate science to the wider public. If you would like to write a post, but aren’t sure what to write about, contact the leaders to discuss further. 6. Recent products
i. 2k Network: The Iso2k project of the 2k Network has a paper open for discussion until 1 April in Earth System Science Data. "The Iso2k Database: A global compilation of paleo-δ18O and δ2H records to aid understanding of Common Era climate", by Bronwen Konecky et al., presents the Iso2k database, a global compilation of previously published datasets from a variety of natural archives that record the stable oxygen (δ18O) or hydrogen (δ2H) isotopic composition of environmental waters, which reflect hydroclimate changes over the CE: https://doi.org/10.5194/essd-2020-5
ii. CVAS: Climate variables are related over long times and large distances. This shows up as correlations for averages on long intervals or between distant areas. An important finding is that the majority of correlations in climate can be described by a simple mathematical relationship. iii. LandCover6k: a. 10. Endorsed and affiliated groups updates
i. CarpClim: The newly endorsed Carpathian Climate and Environment Working Group (CarpClim) will hold a workshop in September 2020, supported by PAGES. See point 9 for all details.
ii. IPICS: Abstract submission is open until 30 April for the PAGES-supported 3rd International Partnership in Ice Core Sciences (IPICS) Open Science Conference to be held from 18-23 October 2020 in Crans Montana, Switzerland. The programs for the conference and the accompanying Ice Core Young Scientists (ICYS) workshop are also now available online. See point 9 for all details.
iii. PMIP: PMIP has a special issue in Climate of the Past with many papers open for discussion (preprint under review). These papers focus on: the design of the PMIP4 experiments; data syntheses to which model results can be compared; and analysing single or multi-model results from PMIP4 and CMIP6 experiments. iv. 11. Future Earth updates
i. Earth Leadership Program: Together with the University of Colorado Boulder, USA, and Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment, USA, Future Earth is pleased to announce the launch of the Earth Leadership Program. Find out more: https://www.earthleadership.org/
ii. In case you missed it - Our Future on Earth Report 2020: Humanity is at a critical stage in the transition to a more sustainable planet and society. Our actions in the next decade will determine our collective path forward. The report aims to tell the story of where we are on our collective journey by connecting the dots between what society is currently experiencing – from fires to food shortages to a rise in populism – with recent developments in the research community. iii. GLP: a. Call for Expressions of Interest (EOI) to host the Global Land Programme (GLP) IPO beginning 2022. The GLP Scientific Steering Committee invites calls from internationally-active institutes to host the International Programme Office (IPO) of the Global Land Programme (GLP) starting in 2022. The ideal institute will have an international reputation for cutting-edge sustainability research with a focus on human-environment interactions. The successful bid stands to gain higher visibility, exposure at an international level, and recognition as a world leader in the land systems science community. Hosting the International Programme Office will also assist the institute to align with international priorities and new developments. In return, the host institution must be prepared to commit resources to the international coordination of the land systems science research community. Call for self-nomination for WCRP expert groups: WCRP is currently inviting self-nominations from highly enthusiastic and dedicated experts for membership of the following groups: WCRP Data Advisory Council (WDAC); WCRP Modeling Advisory Council (WMAC); Working Group on Coupled Modeling (WGCM); Working Group on Subseasonal to Interdecadal Prediction (WGSIP); Working Group on Numerical Experimentation (WGNE); CORDEX Science Advisory Team (CORDEX-SAT); Subseasonal to Seasonal (S2S); Project Steering Group.

13. Other news and opportunities
i. Expressions of interest to host the WDS IPO due 10 May 2020: World Data System (WDS) is an Interdisciplinary Body of the International Science Council (ISC; formerly ICSU). The WDS International Programme Office (WDS-IPO) was created in March 2011. Since then, it has been hosted by the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) in Tokyo, Japan, under two five-year Letters of Cooperation between the ISC and NICT. The current agreement ends on 31 March 2021 and, in light of this, ISC and the WDS Science Committee (WDS-SC) invite Expressions of Interest from interested parties to host the WDS International Programme Office by 10 May 2020.
The establishment, funding model, and governance of the new office is expected to build on the examples of the current WDS-IPO and the recently established WDS International Technology Office. However, creative suggestions are welcomed, including partial or shared hosting, or other innovative solutions.

Please note that it is not expected for potential hosts to have precise details in place by this deadline; rather, they should state their interest and what they may be able to offer. ii. Register by 22 April to attend the PalaeoSIG Science Communication and Writing Workshop from 13-14 May 2020 at the University of Stirling, Scotland, UK.
