1. PAGES 6th OSM and 4th YSM updates - sessions announced
PAGES' premier science conferences, the Open Science Meeting (OSM) and Young Scientists Meeting (YSM), are held every four years. The 6th OSM and 4th YSM will be held in Agadir, Morocco, from 16-22 May 2021. The YSM will be held from 16-18 May and the OSM from 18-22 May. Regional field trips and excursions are offered after the OSM.
The Scientific Program Committee and PAGES are pleased to announce the list of planned sessions and first side meetings are now available. 2. Call for authors deadline 30 June - Past Global Changes Magazine for Teens
PAGES is preparing a special magazine issue for teenagers! This issue will highlight paleoscience topics of interest to the next generation, written in an easy to understand format. The objective is to present global change from a paleo perspective. Publication is planned for February 2021.
Editors Graciela Gil Romera, Boris Vannière and Sarah Eggleston are now calling for authors, with the deadline for submissions 30 June. The opportunities for contributions are vast. All information: http://pastglobalchanges.org/2520

Due to COVID-19 disruptions, postal services in some countries have been affected. Delivery of the most recent Past Global Changes Magazine "Past Plant Diversity and Conservation" cannot be guaranteed, and many copies have already been returned to the IPO.

4. Upcoming PAGES deadlines
i. Applications for new PAGES working groups due 16 September: Does your heart pound of paleoscience? Know others who feel the same? PAGES' Working Groups (WGs) are temporary organizations that bring international paleoscientists together to target specific aspects of PAGES' scientific agenda. They tackle broad questions that cannot be answered by a single research team but require the integration of the wider science community. WGs provide a platform for discussion, research, and community building, and normally run in three-year phases with each phase culminating in an intermediary or final major product (e.g. synthesis article, special issue, database). ii. Applications for workshop/meeting financial support due 16 September: To obtain support, workshops/meetings must be open and international, and should encourage the participation of early-career scientists (until ca. five years after PhD) and those from developing countries (including BRICS countries). Applications should be received at least six months before the planned event date, to allow for wide promotion to the paleo community. 5. Watch the PAGES/WDS-Paleo webinar
The primary mission of the World Data Service for Paleoclimatology (WDS-Paleo) is to ensure that global paleoclimatology proxy and derived reconstruction data are maintained in a permanent archive that is easily and openly accessible to the world science community and to other users. New initiatives of the WDS-Paleo, including bulk data download and the Paleoenvironmental Standard Terms (PaST) Thesaurus of measured variables, help to make these data FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, re-usable).

ii. Working group extensions: Due to COVID-19 disruptions, many working groups will be extended for an additional year. iii. 2k Network: The PAGES 2k Network has proceeded in three phases: Phase 1 (2008-2013), Phase 2 (2014-2016) and Phase 3 (2017-2021). As the group is in the final period of Phase 3, 2k Network leaders would like feedback from the PAGES community on how they can help you to facilitate 2k (or broader PAGES) science now and in the future. iv. Carbon in Peat on EArth through Time (C-PEAT): a. Group leader Angela Gallego-Sala was awarded one of the prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grants. This five-year early-career award will allow her to work on Tropical Peatlands and the Carbon Cycle (TroPeaCC). b. Group member Nitin Chaudhary was awarded an early-career grant to carry forward his research on the incorporation of peatland dynamics into regional Earth System Models; he will work towards determining how peatlands-mediated feedbacks affect the regional climate. v. Climate Reconstruction and Impacts from the Archives of Societies (CRIAS): a. Group leader Sam White will give a presentation in the Future Earth Risk-KAN webinar on 18 June. See point 12 for all details.
b. The Martin Bauch et al. paper "A Prequel to the Dantean Anomaly: The Water Seesaw and Droughts of 1302–1307 in Europe" is open for discussion in Climate of the Past until 15 July. It is a product of the CRIAS workshop held in Leipzig, Germany, in October 2019.
vi. Climate Variability Across Scales (CVAS): Phase 2 of CVAS launched this year and plans are underway for an online seminar series to provide an overview of the current state of the research and discuss future plans. CVAS will also incorporate and build on the activities of PAGES' former working group DAPS (Paleoclimate Reanalyses, Data Assimilation and Proxy System modeling). vii. Floods Working Group: On 7 May, the group held the online session "Extreme hydrological events of the Past" as part of EGU2020. The session contained 12 displays and attracted a large audience from the paleohydrology community. viii. LandCover6k: a. The group's 4th General Workshop, planned for 9-10 October 2020, is postponed until a future date. Given current circumstances, the organizers at the University of Pennsylvania are assessing the possibility of holding the workshop in 2021 based on university reopening and governmental safety guidelines. An interim online meeting solution is being developed for the October 2020 dates. More information will be provided when available. See point 9 for all details.
b. A paper in Land by Erle Ellis et al. introduces the first global reconstruction and mapping of anthromes and their changes across the 12,000-year interval from 10,000 BCE to 2015 CE; the Anthromes 12k dataset: https://doi.org/10.3390/land9050129
ix. PALeo constraints on SEA level rise (PALSEA): The 2020 PALSEA meeting (joint with SERCE) "Improving understanding of ice sheet and solid earth processes driving paleo sea level change" scheduled for 14-16 September 2020 at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in New York, USA, is postponed to 2021. The 2021 meeting will have the same scope and venue. In order not to lose contact with the community, leaders will organize a two-day virtual PALSEA Express in September 2020. Each day will be composed of three hours of virtual talks and posters. The two days will be scheduled at different times, in order to allow connections from different time zones. x. PAGES-PMIP Working Group on Quaternary Interglacials (QUIGS): The September 2020 workshop in Cassis, France, will most likely be postponed to mid-2021. See point 9 for all details.
xi. Speleothem Isotopes Synthesis and AnaLysis (SISAL): The report about SISAL's 4th workshop in Xi'an, China, was published in the most recent issue of Past Global Changes Magazine: http://pastglobalchanges.org/products/pages-magazine/13042
xii. Volcanic Impacts on Climate and Society (VICS): The postponed September 2020 workshop dates have been confirmed for 8-10 March 2021 in Aarhus, Denmark. See point 9 for all details.
7. PAGES Early-Career Network updates
i. Abstract submission and grant request deadlines extended: The joint PAGES-INQUA ECR workshop "Past Socio-Environmental Systems (PASES)" is planned for 9-13 November 2020 in La Serena y Coquimbo, Chile. The organizing committee is closely monitoring the situation with travel bans and continued concern due to the COVID-19 outbreak and spread, and is doing its best to provide opportunities for a fruitful and inspiring meeting for everyone.
Plans are underway for potential alternative arrangements if the in-person meeting doesn't happen - there could be online sessions held in November, and the in-person meeting rescheduled for 2021. Innovative virtual forums would then run until the in-person meeting takes place. Because the event will still go ahead (a final decision on the meeting format is anticipated to be made by 16 June), we still encourage abstract submissions. Abstract submission and grant request application deadlines have been extended to 15 June. See point 9 for all details.
ii. Webinar online: The 8 June 2020 webinar, in Spanish, by Dr Marco Aquino (postdoctoral researcher, Maynooth University) is now available on the ECN YouTube channel. He talks about his new R package for age-depth modeling using 210Pb: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XhmbdaGcdmU&feature=youtu.be
iii. The Early Pages Blog: a. Many aspects of modern life depend on effective communications between satellites and receivers here on Earth. But these vital communications can be interfered with by forces beyond our control. b. Early-career researchers (ECRs) are often affected by precarious employment, frequent moves, and an unsure future. This renders ECRs especially vulnerable during the COVID-19 pandemic. iv. Join the Write Club! The PAGES ECN Write Club holds regular online writing retreats for ECRs from all over the globe. They meet to write in a time-structured way, with the moral support of fellow ECRs. v. Apply by 17 July to join the SCOR Executive Committee: The call for applications for an Early-Career Scientist (ECS) to join the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR) Executive Committee (EC) is open. The ECS in the SCOR EC will help reach the broader early-career community and involve it in SCOR activities. The ECS will have the same responsibilities as other EC members, with a term of appointment of two years. Applicants should be no more than 10 years from PhD, not counting time for family leave, and should be affiliated with an ocean science organization, institution, or government agency. 8. The PAGES Early-Career Award - nominations due 30 September
PAGES recently announced a biennial Early-Career Award (ECA) for excellence in collaborative scholarship, including research, communication, outreach, leadership, networking, community service, and international collaboration.
The PAGES ECA honors people in the early stages of their career for their engagement both within and beyond the scientific community, for example through (though not limited to) involvement in science coordination, outreach, networking, leadership activities, development of international collaborations, and for excellence in research in support of PAGES' goals.

i. Zoom seminar hosted by Long-term Ecology Group: "LakePulse network: First Canada-wide assessment of lakes" on 11 June from 12:00-13:00 UTC. Professor Irene Gregory-Eaves (Department of Biology, McGill University) will present a 45-min seminar followed by 15 mins for Q&A on the preliminary research findings from the LakePulse NSERC-funded network that is assessing the current biotic and abiotic conditions in 633 Canadian lakes relative to pre-industrial conditions. Research findings from this network are already providing a much-needed perspective on the spatio-temporal changes of lake aquatic ecosystems in Canada, a country that is a key steward of a significant proportion of global inland waters. ii. Global Consultations on Open Science: Are you a scientist, a publisher, a science policy maker or someone with experience and interest in Open Science? Your input is important. To build a global consensus on Open Science, the development of the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science relies on an inclusive, transparent and consultative process involving all countries and all stakeholders. The Recommendation is expected to define shared values and principles for Open Science, and point to concrete measures on Open Access and Open Data with proposals for action to bring citizens closer to science, and commitments for a better distribution and production of science in the world. The process of drafting the Recommendation is regionally balanced, highly inclusive and collaborative. It involves multiple stakeholders and is expected to lead to the adoption of the Recommendation by UNESCO Member States in 2021. The survey can be completed online in several languages. iii. Virtual Palaeoscience: ViPs (Virtual Palaeoscience) is a community-led project to create a shared archive of online palaeoscience teaching resources both as a short-term COVID-19 response and for longer-term enhancement of learning, accessibility and outreach. The Project Team consists of Jane Bunting, Simon Hutchinson, Kim Davies, Nicki Whitehouse and Des McDougall. Following a successful launch meeting in May 2020, the project is setting up working groups to find, evaluate, and bring together existing materials in a single web resource and to create a range of new materials to meet specific needs. In August, these new resources will be presented at a virtual workshop and plans for longer-term projects, including the creation of multi-faceted virtual landscapes, will be developed. iv. New research seminar initiative: PERCS (Paleo EaRly Career Seminars) is a weekly seminar series that promotes and features work by early-career researchers working in the broad field of "Pal(a)eo" sciences (e.g. -ntology, -ecology, -oceanography, -climate). A PERCS seminar takes place on Zoom, and consists of a live streamed short (~30 min) seminar followed by a Q&A session and an opportunity for small group discussion and networking with other attendees using break-out rooms. v. Deadline extended - Expressions of interest to host the WDS IPO: World Data System (WDS) is an Interdisciplinary Body of the International Science Council (ISC; formerly ICSU). The WDS International Programme Office (WDS-IPO) was created in March 2011. Since then, it has been hosted by the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) in Tokyo, Japan. The current agreement ends on 31 March 2021 and, in light of this, ISC and the WDS Science Committee (WDS-SC) invite Expressions of Interest from interested parties to host the WDS International Programme Office from April 2021.
Expressions of Interest should be completed and sent by 31 July by using this online form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe-NuQx5AHaSHIvzgMJWvcYiNLGxVeItiSj-KHADo8iBd5k8A/viewform or by sending the form in the Call (https://www.icsu-wds.org/files/wds-ipo-call-for-expressions-of-interest, pages 5–7) to ipoicsu-wds.org (ipo[at]icsu-wds[dot]org). Please note that it is not expected for potential hosts to have precise details in place by this deadline; rather, they should state their interest and what they may be able to offer.
