1. PAGES 6th OSM and 4th YSM - YSM applications close in one month
Abstract submission and registration is now open for PAGES' 6th Open Science Meeting (OSM) and 4th Young Scientists Meeting (YSM) to be held in Agadir, Morocco, from 16-22 May 2021. The YSM will be held from 16-18 May and the OSM from 18-22 May: https://pages-osm.org/
The registration process for the YSM is different to the OSM. Early-career researchers wishing to attend the YSM must send in an application. The application, abstract submission, and financial support request deadline for the YSM is 13 September. Approximately 80 places will be awarded, to help keep the YSM at a size that benefits all participants: https://pages-osm.org/index.php/ysm/application

Please send a short text (max 100 words) and, if you wish, an accompanying photo with caption (preferably at least 300 dpi) about a particularly memorable or funny experience with PAGES to pages

3. Save the date! PAGES and Neotoma webinar 15 October
The 3rd PAGES webinar will be held in conjunction with Neotoma on 15 October 2020 from 16:00-17:30 UTC. Presenter Jack Williams will give an overview of the Neotoma Paleoecology Database, its mission, key features of its data model, its software ecosystem, growth trends and other recent developments, research and educational partnerships, and data governance. vi. Climate Reconstruction and Impacts from the Archives of Societies (CRIAS)
a. The group's third workshop will be held from 19-20 March 2021 in Hong Kong, and also online. The abstract submission deadline has been extended to 30 October 2020. See point 8 for all details.
b. The paper "Central Europe, 1531–1540 CE: The driest summer decade of the past five centuries?" by Rudolf Brázdil et al. is open for discussion in Climate of the Past until 14 September. Previous studies related to historical droughts in the Czech Lands showed that summers of 1531–1540 could represent the driest summer decade of the past 500 years. To confirm this hypothesis, documentary data from Central Europe were collected and presented for individual summers and complemented by maps of precipitation and drought distribution to document corresponding weather patterns and their various impacts: https://cp.copernicus.org/preprints/cp-2020-92/
c. Group members will conduct PAGES' 6th OSM Session 22. Historical climate reconstruction and impacts utilizing written records. See point 1 for all details.
vii. Cycles of Sea-Ice Dynamics in the Earth system (C-SIDE)
Leaders announce a call for contributions to the group's Climate of the Past special issue "Reconstructing Southern Ocean sea-ice dynamics on glacial-to-historical timescales". Submission deadline is 31 December 2021, extendable if necessary. The special issue editors are Karen Kohfeld, Xavier Crosta, Alice Marzocchi, Juliane Müller, Marit-Solveig Seidenkrantz, and Laurie Menviel. viii. Climate Variability Across Scales (CVAS)

x. LandCover6k
a. The group's 4th General Workshop, planned for 9-10 October 2020, is postponed until a future date. Given current circumstances, the organizers at the University of Pennsylvania, USA, are assessing the possibility of holding the workshop in 2021 based on university reopening and governmental safety guidelines. An interim online meeting solution is being developed for the October 2020 dates. More information will be provided when available. See point 8 for all details.
b. Group members are involved in two PAGES' 6th OSM sessions: Session 21. Deep histories of land-use and land-cover change in African montane regions and Session 41. Towards a global past human land-use and land-cover synthesis over the Holocene. See point 1 for all details.
xi. PALeo constraints on SEA level rise (PALSEA)
a. Submit abstracts by 15 August for the PALSEAExpress meeting to be held online from 15-16 September 2020. You can also register to attend without submitting an abstract (deadline 11 September). This meeting has been added to the PALSEA calendar because the planned joint meeting with SERCE "Improving understanding of ice sheet and solid Earth processes driving paleo sea level change" has been postponed until 2021. See point 8 for details about both events.
b. The group will conduct a joint session with QUIGS at the AGU Fall Meeting in December. See point 5 for all details.
c. Group members are involved in two PAGES' 6th OSM sessions: Session 2. The last interglacial and Session 31. Quantifying relative sea-level changes from geological archives. See point 1 for all details.
xii. PalEOclimate and the PeopLing of the Earth (PEOPLE 3000)
a. The workshop planned for later this month in Arica, Chile, has been postponed. See point 8 for all details.
b. Group members will conduct PAGES' 6th OSM Session 40. Integrating method and theory for global comparisons of human demography and climate change in the Late Holocene. See point 1 for all details.
xiii. PAGES-PMIP Working Group on Quaternary Interglacials (QUIGS)
a. Call for contributions! The virtual QUIGS-IFG meeting on glacial terminations will be held on 10 and 12 November 2020. The deadline for abstract submission is 10 September. Registration opens in October. See point 8 for all details.
b. The original September 2020 workshop in Cassis, France, has been postponed for one year. See point 8 for all details.
c. The group will conduct a joint session with PALSEA at the AGU Fall Meeting in December. See point 5 for all details.

xiv. Speleothem Isotopes Synthesis and AnaLysis (SISAL)

xv. Volcanic Impacts on Climate and Society (VICS)
a. The next VICS workshop, originally scheduled for late September 2020, will be held 8-10 March 2021. The working plan is that a physical meeting will be held in Aarhus, Denmark, and the new dates will still allow on-site participants to interact with an exhibition on volcanism and society at the Moesgård Museum. The meeting will also be designed to include effective methods of remote participation. See point 8 for all details.
b. Group members will conduct PAGES' 6th OSM Session 12. Volcanic impacts on climate and society. See point 1 for all details.
5. AGU Fall Meeting 2020 and EGU General Assembly 2021 updates
i. AGU 2020
The AGU Fall Meeting will be held online and in San Francisco, USA, in December 2020. Content will include real-time sessions, networking opportunities and poster hall time. With all of this content, the Fall Meeting will be concentrated from 7-11 December and events will be extended around the meeting from 1-17 December. There will be recorded sessions so you can watch at your convenience. Convergent themes including global science policy, data, natural hazards, and climate science will be prominently featured. The registration fee will be about 50% less than the in-person rate and lower for graduate students and other groups. Registration opens late August. ii. EGU 2021
The EGU General Assembly will be held from 25-30 April 2021 in Vienna, Austria. The EGU invites you to take an active part in organizing the scientific program. 6. PAGES Early-Career Network updates
i. Call for Reviewers of the SOD of the Working Group II Contribution to the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report (AR6)
Mountain Research Initiviative (MRI), alongside the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS), the PAGES Early-Career Network (PAGES ECN), the Permafrost Young Research Network (PYRN) and the Young Earth System Scientists (YESS) community, are calling for early-career researchers to participate in a group review of the Second Order Draft (SOD) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report (AR6). The review will run from 4 December 2020 to 29 January 2021. To participate, register no later than 23 September (23:59 UTC). ii. PAGES-INQUA ECR workshop updates
a. The joint PAGES-INQUA ECR "Past Socio-Environmental Systems (PASES)" workshop, planned for 9-13 November 2020, has been postponed until November 2021. The venue will still be La Serena y Coquimbo, Chile. In order to keep momentum going for the in-person workshop, the organizing committee will conduct a virtual workshop in November 2020 (dates and program TBA). See point 8 for more details.
b. Applications outcome: The conference organizers have evaluated all submitted abstracts (approx. 70). All those who submitted an abstract will receive an email stating if their abstract and grant request have been approved for the 2021 workshop. Selection criteria promoted not only abstract quality and highly motivated ECRs, but also cultural, gender, and economic equality and diversity. Unsuccessful applicants are highly encouraged to participate at the virtual PASES workshop in November 2020. Questions? iii. Webinars
a. "How to start a PAGES working group": Michael Evans, PAGES SSC Co-chair and EXCOM member, will give advice about how to start a new working group within PAGES. The webinar will likely be planned for the second half of September. Stay tuned for the official announcement.
b. East Africa webinar series: Plans are in development by regional representatives within the East African region to organize a webinar series by African researchers about the current paleo-research landscape in Africa. The series is planned to start in late 2020.
c. Pal(a)eo PERCS is an ongoing virtual seminar series designed to showcase the research of ECRs in paleo- (ntology, ecology, ceanography, climate,etc.). Anyone is welcome to apply for a talk on their subject. Some of the talks will be given by PAGES ECN members. For more information, go to: https://paleopercs.wordpress.com/

The PAGES ECN Write Club holds regular online writing retreats for ECRs from all over the globe. They meet to write in a time-structured way, with the moral support of fellow ECRs. 7. Upcoming PAGES deadlines
i. Applications for new PAGES working groups due 16 September
Does your heart pound of paleoscience? Know others who feel the same? PAGES' Working Groups (WGs) are temporary organizations that bring international paleoscientists together to target specific aspects of PAGES' scientific agenda. They tackle broad questions that cannot be answered by a single research team but require the integration of the wider science community. WGs provide a platform for discussion, research, and community building, and normally run in three-year phases with each phase culminating in an intermediary or final major product (e.g. synthesis article, special issue, database). ii. Applications for workshop/meeting financial support due 16 September
To obtain support, workshops/meetings must be open and international, and should encourage the participation of early-career scientists (until ca. five years after PhD) and those from developing countries (including BRICS countries). Applications should be received at least six months before the planned event date, to allow for wide promotion to the paleo community. Financial support is available for meetings classified as Open Call and Educational and also for current PAGES WGs. i. CarpClim
a. The PAGES-endorsed Carpathian Climate and Environment Working Group (CarpClim) will hold a workshop from 31 August to 4 September 2020. See point 9 for all details.
b. An open-air laboratory has been established in the Carpathians at the Carpathian Interdisciplinary Research Center (CIRC): http://geoconcept.ro/circ/. CarpClim leaders are looking to collect secondhand (or over used) lab and field equipment from partners in Europe. The equipment should still be functional but not used anymore (old fashioned, not updated, needing repair, etc). Shipping would be paid for by CIRC. ii. IPICS
The PAGES-supported 3rd International Partnership in Ice Core Sciences (IPICS) Open Science Conference scheduled for 18-23 October 2020 in Crans Montana, Switzerland, has been postponed until October 2021. ii. Collaborative Research Action (CRA) funding call on Transdisciplinary Research for Pathways to Sustainability
On 23 July 2020, the Belmont Forum officially launched a Collaborative Research Action (CRA) funding call on Transdisciplinary Research for Pathways to Sustainability. The call focuses on supporting transdisciplinary networks to innovate solutions and/or synthesize positive and negative inter-linkages across the SDGs, which will contribute to the co-design of sustainable development pathways. The Future Earth Secretariat is a partner of this CRA by:
i) providing research funds from the PEGASuS program to support research synthesis by African research consortia;
ii) organising a virtual capacity building workshop for early-career researchers from Africa interested in joining Belmont Forum consortium proposals: http://pastglobalchanges.org/calendar/2020/127-pages/2051
iii) supporting global coordination and facilitation of the Collaborative Research Action with the goal of creating synergies among the funded projects. This latter activity will be aligned with the Future Earth Pathways initiative: https://futureearth.org/initiatives/earth-targets-initiatives/science-based-pathways/.

iv. Future Earth Summit
Another key effort to build and support the Future Earth global community revolves around the Future Earth Summit. Following the Future Earth Summit from 15-17 June 2020, a Post-Summit Committee – consisting of representatives from the Global Research Projects, Knowledge-Action Networks, National and Regional Structures, as well as the Secretariat and an Early Career Representative – has started its work. The first deliverable will be a Summit Declaration that will be delivered to the Future Earth Governing Council to ensure community inputs help guide the ongoing Future Earth reform process. Updates will be shared regularly.

vi. Sustainability Research and Innovation Congress
The inaugural Future Earth and Belmont Forum Sustainability Research and Innovation Congress (SRI2020) planned for 14-17 June 2020 in Brisbane, Australia, has now been rescheduled to 12-15 June 2021. All accepted sessions will be automatically rolled over into the new Congress program, so you will not need to submit a new proposal. For those who have submitted applications for Popcorn Sessions and Demonstrations, you are invited to re-submit your proposal in the near future. See point 9 for all details.
vii. Mountain Research Initiative (MRI)

i. Analyseries software survey
The Analyseries software created by Didier Paillard (LSCE) in the 1990s is on its way to be outdated. It does not run on the latest Mac Operating System (Catalina) and is not compatible with the latest Excel versions (from Excel 2016 on). An operational Analyseries requires to totally rewrite the software. Aline Govin (aline.govinlsce.ipsl.fr (aline[dot]govin[at]lsce[dot]ipsl[dot]fr)) and Elisabeth Michel (elisabeth.michellsce.ipsl.fr (elisabeth[dot]michel[at]lsce[dot]ipsl[dot]fr)) have set up a survey on the use of Analyseries to determine how much this software is necessary to the scientific community and which functionalities the new Analyseries should potentially include. The survey (in English) is available here: https://sondage.lsce.ipsl.fr/index.php/966546?newtest=Y&lang=en/. It takes 10-15 minutes to answer all questions, which are all optional. The survey will close on 20 September.
ii. Scientific Data paleoclimate data collection
To understand our world's changing climate, it is imperative that we understand how climates of the past varied. This collection brings together a series of papers published at Scientific Data that describe and share valuable data on past climates. The data were obtained from a variety of sources, including historical records that can inform us about the recent past, and biological or fossil proxies that allow us to learn about climates that existed long before man walked the Earth. iii. Data analysis workshop

v. Virtual Palaeoscience
ViPs (Virtual Palaeoscience) is a community-led project to create a shared archive of online palaeoscience teaching resources, both as a short-term COVID-19 response and as longer-term enhancement of learning, accessibility and public outreach. Following a successful launch meeting in May 2020, the project has set up working groups to find, evaluate, and bring together existing materials in a single web resource and to create a range of new materials to meet specific needs. In August, these new resources will be presented at a virtual workshop and plans for longer-term projects, including the creation of multi-faceted virtual landscapes, will be developed. vi. PERCS (Paleo EaRly Career Seminars)
PERCS is a weekly seminar series that promotes and features work by early-career researchers working in the broad field of "Pal(a)eo" sciences (e.g. -ntology, -ecology, -oceanography, -climate). A PERCS seminar takes place on Zoom, and consists of a live streamed short (~30 min) seminar followed by a Q&A session and an opportunity for small group discussion and networking with other attendees using break-out rooms.
