1. PAGES 6th OSM and 4th YSM deadline extensions
PAGES' 6th Open Science Meeting (OSM) and 4th Young Scientists Meeting (YSM) will be held in Agadir, Morocco, from 16-22 May 2021. The YSM will be held from 16-18 May and the OSM from 18-22 May: https://pages-osm.org/
PAGES is monitoring the coronavirus situation closely and will follow guidance from the relevant national public health authorities and global health organizations. PAGES continues to hope that the Young Scientists Meeting and the Open Science Meeting will take place as scheduled in May 2021 in Agadir and is proceeding with all plans to convene the meetings. PAGES and the Local Organizing Committee will issue further updates in the coming months.
YSM:
The registration process for the YSM is different to the OSM. Early-career researchers wishing to attend the YSM must submit an application.
The application, abstract submission, and financial support request deadline for the YSM has been extended to 11 October. The decision notification date for selection of YSM attendees and those receiving grants is now 15 November.
Approximately 80 places will be awarded, to help keep the YSM at a size that benefits all participants.

2. Share your PAGES' memories for our 30th anniversary
As part of the celebrations for our 30th anniversary, a special issue of Past Global Changes Magazine will be published in May 2021. Would you like to share a story? We're calling on current and past working group members, working group leaders, SSC, EXCOM and ECN members, guest scientists, and workshop attendees to contribute.
Please send a short text (max 100 words) and, if you wish, an accompanying photo with caption (preferably at least 300 dpi) about a particularly memorable or funny experience with PAGES to show mail address by 30 October, using the subject line "30th anniversary contribution". Alternatively, you can also just send a photo and caption. Please make sure any identifiable people in the photos have given their permission.
We look forward to showcasing your stories and images in the magazine and on a dedicated 30th anniversary page on PAGES' website.
3. PAGES and Neotoma webinar 15 October
The 3rd PAGES webinar will be held in conjunction with Neotoma on 15 October 2020 from 16:00-17:30 UTC. Presenter Jack Williams will give an overview of the Neotoma Paleoecology Database, its mission, key features of its data model, its software ecosystem, growth trends and other recent developments, research and educational partnerships, and data governance. Group members will conduct PAGES' 6th OSM Session 34. Cryosphere change impacts on arctic coastal environments and ecosystems during the Holocene. See point 1 for all details.
v. Carbon in Peat on EArth through Time (C-PEAT)
a. A reminder that Graeme Swindles et al. are gathering charcoal records from peat cores for a new collaborative project as part of C-PEAT, focussed on peatlands fires in the Holocene – HOLOPEATFIRE. The aim is to carry out a global-scale analysis of peatland fires (tropics to the poles) through time and write it up as a multi-author paper for Nature-group/PNAS or similar. The steering group includes Graeme Swindles, Angela Gallego-Sala, Julie Loisel, Mark Hardiman, Phil Camill, Paul Morris, Maarten Blaauw, and Tom Roland. Everyone who contributes data or other expertise will be an author on the work as default. If you have any charcoal data from a peatland with an associated chronology and would like to be involved, contact Graeme for the template to complete: show mail address and to declare your interest in contributing. All data should be submitted by September 2020.
b. The group is involved in two sessions at the AGU Fall Meeting in December. See point 5 for all details.
c. The joint PAGES-INQUA workshop on tropical peatland processes and ecosystem services will be held in Bangkok, Thailand, in March 2021. See point 9 for all details.
d. Group members will conduct PAGES' 6th OSM Session 37. Peatland ecosystem functioning and ecosystem services: How paleoscience and management can feed back to each other. See point 1 for all details.
vi. Climate Reconstruction and Impacts from the Archives of Societies (CRIAS)
a. The group's third workshop will be held from 19-20 March 2021 in Hong Kong, and also online. The abstract submission deadline has been extended to 30 October. See point 9 for all details.
b. The paper "Central Europe, 1531–1540 CE: The driest summer decade of the past five centuries?" by Rudolf Brázdil et al. is open for discussion in Climate of the Past until 14 September. Previous studies related to historical droughts in the Czech Lands showed that summers of 1531–1540 could represent the driest summer decade of the past 500 years. To confirm this hypothesis, documentary data from Central Europe were collected and presented for individual summers and complemented by maps of precipitation and drought distribution to document corresponding weather patterns and their various impacts: https://cp.copernicus.org/preprints/cp-2020-92/

vii. Cycles of Sea-Ice Dynamics in the Earth system (C-SIDE)
Leaders announce a call for contributions to the group's Climate of the Past special issue "Reconstructing Southern Ocean sea-ice dynamics on glacial-to-historical timescales". Submission deadline is 31 December 2021, extendable if necessary. The special issue editors are Karen Kohfeld, Xavier Crosta, Alice Marzocchi, Juliane Müller, Marit-Solveig Seidenkrantz, and Laurie Menviel. viii. Climate Variability Across Scales (CVAS)
a. Register by 30 September for the workshop "Beyond Palaeoclimate Ping Pong: Improving estimates of past climate variability by consistent data-model comparison" to be held from 3-6 December in Heidelberg, Germany, and also online. See point 9 for all details.

The series aims to provide an overview of the current state of the research relevant to the CVAS community in order to identify starting points for collaborative projects. ix. Floods Working Group (FWG)
Group members will conduct PAGES' 6th OSM Session 16. Towards an improved understanding of past flood variability and examples on how such data can have a bearing on present and future flood risk management. See point 1 for all details.
x. LandCover6k
a. The group's 4th General Workshop, planned for 9-10 October 2020, is postponed until a future date. Given current circumstances, the organizers at the University of Pennsylvania, USA, are assessing the possibility of holding the workshop in 2021 based on university reopening and governmental safety guidelines. See point 9 for all details.
b. Group members are involved in two PAGES' 6th OSM sessions: Session 21. Deep histories of land-use and land-cover change in African montane regions and Session 41. Towards a global past human land-use and land-cover synthesis over the Holocene. See point 1 for all details.
xi. PALeo constraints on SEA level rise (PALSEA)
a. Registration for the PALSEAExpress meeting to be held online from 15-16 September 2020 closes 11 September. This meeting has been added to the PALSEA calendar because the planned joint meeting with SERCE "Improving understanding of ice sheet and solid Earth processes driving paleo sea level change" has been postponed until 2021. See point 9 for details about both events.
b. A new paper acknowledging PALSEA, on the influence of foraminiferal count size on reconstructions of paleo-marsh elevation, has been published in Journal of Foraminiferal Research. See point 8 for all details.
c. The group will conduct a joint session with QUIGS at the AGU Fall Meeting in December. See point 5 for all details.
d. Group members are involved in two PAGES' 6th OSM sessions: Session 2. The last interglacial and Session 31. Quantifying relative sea-level changes from geological archives. See point 1 for all details.
xii. PalEOclimate and the PeopLing of the Earth (PEOPLE 3000)
a. The "Understanding long-term human-environment feedback loops through the integration of archaeology, paleoclimate and ecological models" workshop in Arica, Chile, has been postponed. Potential new dates could be in January or March 2021. See point 9 for all details.
b. Group members will conduct PAGES' 6th OSM Session 40. Integrating method and theory for global comparisons of human demography and climate change in the Late Holocene. See point 1 for all details.
xiii. PAGES-PMIP Working Group on Quaternary Interglacials (QUIGS)
a. Call for contributions! The virtual QUIGS-IFG meeting on glacial terminations will be held on 10 and 12 November 2020. The deadline for abstract submission is 10 September. Registration opens in October. See point 9 for all details.
b. The original September 2020 workshop in Cassis, France, has been postponed until 21-23 Sepember 2021. See point 9 for all details.
c. A new paper, inspired by past workshop discussions, on the Mid-Pleistocene Transition and the Southern Ocean's role in moderating Earth's climate is now available. See point 8 for all details.
d. The group will conduct a joint session with PALSEA at the AGU Fall Meeting in December. See point 5 for all details.
e. Group members are involved in PAGES' 6th OSM Session 2. The last interglacial. See point 1 for all details.
xiv. Speleothem Isotopes Synthesis and AnaLysis (SISAL)
a. A new paper from Andrew Lorrey et al. on late quaternary climate variability and change from New Zealand speleothems, which re-evaluates speleothem isotope series from Aotearoa that were recently contributed to the Speleothem Isotopes Synthesis and AnaLysis (SISAL) database, is now available. b. Group members will conduct PAGES' 6th OSM Session 3. New developments in speleothem paleoclimate and paleoenvironmental science. See point 1 for all details.
xv. Volcanic Impacts on Climate and Society (VICS)
a. The next VICS workshop, originally scheduled for late September 2020, will be held 8-10 March 2021. The working plan is that a physical meeting will be held in Aarhus, Denmark, and the new dates will still allow on-site participants to interact with an exhibition on volcanism and society at the Moesgård Museum. The meeting will also be online. See point 9 for all details.

5. AGU Fall Meeting 2020 and EGU General Assembly 2021 updates
i. AGU 2020
The AGU Fall Meeting will be held online and in San Francisco, USA, in December 2020. Content will include real-time sessions, networking opportunities and poster hall time. With all of this content, the Fall Meeting will be concentrated from 7-11 December and events will be extended around the meeting from 1-17 December. There will be recorded sessions so you can watch at your convenience. Convergent themes including global science policy, data, natural hazards, and climate science will be prominently featured. ii. EGU 2021
The EGU General Assembly will be held from 25-30 April 2021 in Vienna, Austria. The EGU invites you to take an active part in organizing the scientific program. A European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant Mentoring online event, hosted by the Young Academy of Europe (YAE), will be held on 21 September. iii. Call for Reviewers of the SOD of the Working Group II Contribution to the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report (AR6)
Mountain Research Initiviative (MRI), alongside the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS), PAGES ECN, the Permafrost Young Research Network (PYRN), and the Young Earth System Scientists (YESS) community, are calling for ECRs to participate in a group review of the Second Order Draft (SOD) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report (AR6). iv. PAGES-INQUA ECR PASES workshop updates
The joint PAGES-INQUA ECR "Past Socio-Environmental Systems (PASES)" workshop, planned for 9-13 November 2020, has been postponed until November 2021. The venue will still be La Serena y Coquimbo, Chile. In order to keep momentum going for the in-person workshop, the organizing committee will conduct a virtual workshop from 9-11 November 2020. 7. Upcoming PAGES deadlines
i. Applications for new PAGES working groups due 16 September
If you have already contacted a PAGES SSC Member to discuss your new working group proposal (deadline was 2 September), please remember to submit your applications by 16 September. All details: http://pastglobalchanges.org/science/wg/new-wg-proposal. PAGES' Working Groups (WGs) are temporary organizations that bring international paleoscientists together to target specific aspects of PAGES' scientific agenda. They tackle broad questions that cannot be answered by a single research team but require the integration of the wider science community. WGs provide a platform for discussion, research, and community building, and normally run in three-year phases with each phase culminating in an intermediary or final major product (e.g. synthesis article, special issue, database). The next deadline for new working group applications will be in February 2021.
ii. Applications for workshop/meeting financial support due 16 September
If you have already contacted a PAGES SSC Member to discuss your new workshop/meeting support proposal (deadline was 2 September), please remember to submit your applications by 16 September. To obtain support, workshops/meetings must be open and international, and should encourage the participation of early-career scientists (until ca. five years after PhD) and those from developing countries (including BRICS countries). Applications should be received at least six months before the planned event date, to allow for wide promotion to the paleo community. Financial support is available for meetings classified as Open Call and Educational and also for current PAGES WGs. The next deadline for financial support will be in February 2021.
iii. PAGES Early-Career Award (ECA) nominations due 30 September
This new, biannual award is for excellence in collaborative scholarship, including research, communication, outreach, leadership, networking, community service, and international collaboration. ii. IPICS
The PAGES-supported 3rd International Partnership in Ice Core Sciences (IPICS) Open Science Conference scheduled for 18-23 October 2020 in Crans Montana, Switzerland, has been postponed until October 2021. The potential dates in 2021 could be 10-16 October, and will be confirmed asap. See point 10 for all details.
iii. PMIP

v. Collaborative Research Action (CRA) funding call on Transdisciplinary Research for Pathways to Sustainability
On 23 July 2020, the Belmont Forum officially launched a Collaborative Research Action (CRA) funding call on Transdisciplinary Research for Pathways to Sustainability. The call focuses on supporting transdisciplinary networks to innovate solutions and/or synthesize positive and negative inter-linkages across the SDGs, which will contribute to the co-design of sustainable development pathways. ii. "Pitch your Research" online workshop
The "Pitch your Research" workshop will be held on 20 and 21 October 2020. This interactive format is for PhD students from all disciplines who are dealing with the topic of digitalisation in their dissertation. In the context of a generally understandable scientific short presentation of about 10 minutes, the participants of the workshop get the chance to present their dissertation to other doctoral students and receive individual feedback. Participation is free of charge. Call for papers deadline is 15 September. It's also possible to participate in the event exclusively as a listener. iii. Analyseries software survey
The Analyseries software created by Didier Paillard (LSCE) in the 1990s is on its way to be outdated. It does not run on the latest Mac Operating System (Catalina) and is not compatible with the latest Excel versions (from Excel 2016 on). An operational Analyseries requires to totally rewrite the software. Aline Govin (show mail address) and Elisabeth Michel (show mail address) have set up a survey on the use of Analyseries to determine how much this software is necessary to the scientific community and which functionalities the new Analyseries should potentially include. The survey closes 20 September.
iv. Commission seeks candidates for the ERC Scientific Council
An independent Identification Committee set up by the European Commission has begun the search for potential candidates for membership of the Scientific Council of the European Research Council (ERC).
