b. The 2k Network coordinators will host two Town Halls for the broader 2k community on 25 February to discuss the network's future plans and the potential for a seminar series. The Town Hall will be held twice on the same day to cover different time zones. See point 8 for all details.

b. The joint PAGES-INQUA workshop on tropical peatland processes and ecosystem services, which was re-scheduled from March 2021 in Bangkok, Thailand, will either be held sometime in late 2021, or possibly even in 2022, depending on COVID-19 restrictions. See point 8 for all details.

a. The new online exhibition "Weathered History: The Material Side of Past Climate Change", curated by Martin Bauch and Diana Lucia Feitsch, is now available to watch on Google Arts & Culture. See point 7 for all details.

Interested researchers are encouraged to offer reviews or submit relevant manuscripts for the group's special issue of Climate of the Past "International methods and comparisons in climate reconstruction and impacts from archives of societies." a. The newly launched working group is pleased to announce it now has 100 subscribers to the mailing list. Sign up to the mailing list via the link above. The Steering Committee met in late January to plan the initial activities and surveys. One survey will collect ideas and needs to set up the group's database, and a second will focus on what kind of human traces exist and in what types of archives. Keep an eye on your inbox!
b. Save the dates: The group's preliminary calendar includes an online workshop from 25-27 May 2021, an online workshop from 21-23 September 2021, which will also involve other PAGES working groups, and the group's first in-person meeting is planned for the first half of 2022. a. Nicki Whitehouse and Antolin Ferrin are organizing session #278 "Systemic Approaches to Agricultural and Land Use Change in Prehistoric Societies" at the virtual 27th Annual Meeting of the European Association of Archaeologists from 8-11 September 2021. This session is supported by the LandUse6k project of LandCover6k and the AgriChange Project. The abstract and poster deadline is 26 February. b. New PMIP "Fast Track initiative Eurasia" in collaboration with LandCover6K: The initiative aims to use the datasets produced by LandCover6k currently available (published or soon to be published) to evaluate and revise the land-use information in the HYDE database (Klein Goldewijk et al. 2017) in order to 1) assess whether the empirical LandCover6k information on past land use and land cover make a significant difference in HYDE, and 2) perform several transient climate-model runs with and without land use from the LandCover6k revised HYDE database over the last 8000 years using several Earth System Models (by members of the PMIP community). The ultimate goal is to test whether or not Holocene land-use change and related land-cover change over the Holocene have been a significant climate forcing. a. The first paper in the group's special issue of Earth System Science Data, "WALIS – the World Atlas of Last Interglacial Shorelines", has been published and many more are under discussion. Papers and datasets are open access. See point 7 for all details.
b. A new paper on Western Mediterranean sea levels, which benefited from working group discussions, was published in Scientific Reports. See point 7 for all details.

a. The planned March 2021 workshop in Aarhus, Denmark, has been postponed, most likely until 2022. Until the in-person meeting can take place, group leaders are conducting the webinar series "Worst-case thinking: Past eruptions and volcanic risk analysis". Each webinar will include two speakers giving 20-minute presentations on complementary interdisciplinary volcano/climate/society topics. The first webinar kicks off on 26 February with speakers Gordon Woo and Amy Donovan. See point 8 for all details.
b. The deadline for submissions to the VICS special issue "Interdisciplinary studies of volcanic impacts on climate and society" in Climate of the Past has been extended to 31 May. i. Show-and-Tell webinar series
a. The North American PAGES ECN regional representatives announce an event series consisting primarily of "science show-and-tell". Whether it is a tour of a laboratory setup, walkthrough of a favorite analysis/data/lab method, unboxing of freshly collected samples, or activities in the field, these virtual events are designed to give you a break from traditional zoom slide presentations and get to know the faces and places behind the screens.
The first event, scheduled for 22 February at 17:00 UTC, is hosted by Dr. Daniel Killam. Dan will show his work and "living lab space" at Biosphere 2, where he grows giant clams for biogeochemical research. See point 8 for all details.

ii. CRIAS
a. Contemporary and historical climate change is, in itself, beyond the scale of human perception. But scholars can combine instrumental data, proxy information, and written sources to reconstruct these patterns. What humans could see in the past, and today still can perceive, are meteorological extremes: droughts, heat waves, strong precipitation, floods, cold spells, and storms. Such extreme events, however, have generally left only indirect evidence in the material heritage of past human societies. iii. DEEPICE
Jobs announced: 15 PhD research positions in ice core-related climate science available within MSCA-ITN DEEPICE project. The DEEPICE project (Research and training network on understanding Deep icE corE Proxies to Infer past antarctiC climatE dynamics), funded by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 programme (Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions - Innovative Training Network) calls for applications for 15 fully funded PhD positions (early-stage researcher, ESR) to be filled by October 2021, with attractive complementary training activities and associated research and travel budgets. DEEPICE aims to train a new generation of scientists working on issues related to past climate change in Antarctica by taking advantage of the unique scientific dynamic of the on-going EU H2020 "Beyond EPICA-Oldest Ice Core" project (2019-2025) which aims at extracting a 1.5 million years old ice core in Antarctica. Each seminar has two talks – one from a senior researcher and the second from an early-career researcher in a similar research theme. v. Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP)
a. Call for proposals - deadline 1 April: IODP facilitates international and interdisciplinary research on transformative and societally relevant topics using the ocean drilling, coring, and down-hole measurement facilities JOIDES Resolution, Chikyu, and Mission-Specific Platforms (MSP).
b. Request for information - now open: The JOIDES Resolution Facility Board (JRFB) is issuing a request for information (RFI) to understand the international scientific community’s intent to propose to the 2050 Science Framework. Responses to the RFI will be considered by the JRFB in consultation with the other Facility Boards, funding agencies, and the IODP Forum, and they will inform planning on a potential future drilling program.

b. The PAGES-endorsed 3rd International Partnership in Ice Core Sciences (IPICS) Open Science Conference will be held from 10-15 October 2021 in Crans-Montana, Switzerland. Abstract submissions, registration, and travel support applications are now open. See point 9 for all details.

i. The 10 New Insights in Climate Science 2020
In the coming years, impacts from climate change will be as abrupt and far-reaching as the current pandemic. To help guide collective action, more than 50 scientists from 20 countries have collaborated to name the top 10 insights in climate science in 2020. The 10 New Insights in Climate Science 2020 report is a collaboration of Future Earth, the Earth League, and the World Climate Research Programme. ii. The 10 New Insights in Climate Science 2021
Preparations have begun for the 10 New Insights in Climate Science 2021, which will launch during UNFCCC COP26.
a. Submit proposal insights by 7 March 23:59 UTC: The two key questions asked are 1) What do you think are the 1-3 main new insights regarding climate within your field of research, and which papers or reports are these based on?; and 2) Would you consider being part of an author group for a selected insight, contributing to a peer-reviewed paper on this year's 10 insights, or suggest experts as authors? b. Nominate members for the Editorial Board by 24 February 12:00 UTC: A key mechanism for the Future Earth community to contribute to the project is through the four appointed Editorial Board members. You can also give your continued support to an existing member. Please send suggestions by email with the title "10NICS 2021 Editorial Board nomination" to erik.pihlfutureearth.org (erik[dot]pihl[at]futureearth[dot]org). Include a brief description and CV if possible. Support letters are not necessary but please indicate who in your network is behind the nomination (and copy these in). Future Earth will consider diversity in terms of disciplines, gender, geography, etc.

i. 2021 Monsoon Seminar Series
This weekly seminar series, which runs until December 2021, highlights recent developments in monsoon science following a sustained campaign of scientific ocean drilling offshore, and also the newest developments within continental basins and lakes spanning the global monsoon domain. ii. Goldschmidt 2021

iii. AFD-GDN Biodiversity and Development Award program
Deadline 7 March: The Global Development Network (GDN) and the French Development Agency (AFD) are jointly launching a global competitive research program. The three-year awards program creates a high-quality and high-visibility opportunity for researchers based in select developing countries to produce and disseminate quality research, especially multidisciplinary research, that is independent, of high quality, and policy relevant on the link between biodiversity and development. It consists of four competitively selected individual research grants of up to 24 months, one of which is earmarked for Francophone Africa, plus two additional grants for winners that successfully develop a multi-disciplinary project together. iv. GeoAllies: Call for Proposals for NSF Geosciences DE&I Initiative
Applications close 15 March for a NSF-sponsored project designed to enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion in geosciences. Grants with a baseline of $US2000 will be provided to participants, with the opportunity for additional funds up to a total of $US3000. The aim is to generate data from geoscience programs to inform a longitudinal and multisource primary research study to test experimentally an allyship-training program, by measuring improvement in diversity and inclusion outcomes for underrepresented students. v. Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES)
The second order draft of the chapters and the first order draft of the summary for policymakers of the assessment on values will be open for external review until 19 March. To ensure the highest scientific quality and policy relevance of the assessment, the Multidisciplinary Expert Panel is seeking the widest-possible participation from experts from all relevant disciplines and backgrounds. vi. SCOR 2021 Call for Working Groups
The Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR) Secretariat invites proposals for new working groups to commence activities in late 2021. SCOR will probably be able to support two new working groups for a start in late 2021, pending availability of funds and passing the SCOR review.
