1. New Past Global Changes Magazine on Open Paleodata

The latest issue of Past Global Changes Magazine, titled "Building and Harnessing Open Paleodata" is now available to read and download.

Guest edited by John W. Williams, Alicia J. Newton and Darrell S. Kaufman, this issue showcases the ongoing growth of a rich variety of openly available, globally distributed paleodata. It highlights new scientific, software, funding, and outreach initiatives that harness these open-data resources: http://pastglobalchanges.org/products/pages-magazine/12705

2. Host PAGES 2021 OSM/YSM - apply by 28 Feb

Held every four years, PAGES’ Open Science Meeting (OSM) and Young Scientists Meeting (YSM) provide an invaluable opportunity to bring the past global change community together from around the world to share, discuss, learn, and plan for the future.

Would you and your institution like to be an integral part of these premier events in the international paleoscience calendar? The call is now open to host the next meetings in 2021, preferably in the first half of the year.

The bidding process takes place in two stages with Expressions of Interest due 28 February 2019. PAGES' Scientific Steering Committee will then invite a shortlist of selected potential hosts to submit a full bid by early September 2019. All details: http://pages-osm.org/

3. SSC Announcements - Call for applications and member news

a. Apply to be on our SSC: PAGES activities are overseen by an international Scientific Steering Committee (SSC). The SSC represents a broad spectrum of disciplines and nationalities. The continuing success of PAGES relies on the input of these people. PAGES is calling for applications from scientists to serve on its SSC from January 2020. We encourage applications from scientists in regions currently under-represented and welcome more female applicants. The application deadline is 14 February 2019: http://pastglobalchanges.org/about/structure/scientific-steering-committee/apply

b. Incoming/Outgoing members: The SSC tenure for three long-serving members finishes in a few weeks. We say goodbye to Pascale Braconnot (also Executive Committee), Hugues Goosse and Yusuke Yokoyama and thank them for their valuable contributions over the past six years. In January 2019, the SSC welcomes new members Paul Valdes and Boris Vannière.

4. Propose a new PAGES working group - deadline 14 Feb

Does your heart pound for paleoscience? Know others who feel the same? Propose a new PAGES' working group to address a paleoscience question in an internationally coordinated way. The application deadline is 14 February 2019 17:00 CET.

You must also contact a member of the PAGES Scientific Steering Committee, discussing your plans, at least two weeks before you submit this proposal. Applications received without SSC member notification will not be looked upon favorably. All details: http://pastglobalchanges.org/ini/wg/new-wg-proposal

5. Apply for workshop/meeting support - deadline 14 Feb

The next deadline for PAGES' workshop/meeting support applications is 14 February 2019 17:00 CET. This is an open call. Applicants must contact an SSC member at least two weeks before the deadline to explain the meeting plan and how it is relevant to PAGES.

The meeting or workshop should be scheduled to take place at least six months after the application deadline (i.e. preferably from September 2019 onwards). All details: http://pastglobalchanges.org/my-pages/meeting-support

b. Watch live! Information event for early-career researchers: Mountain Research Initiative, PAGES and the Swiss Polar Institute will conduct a half-day information and networking event on 18 December 2018 in Bern, Switzerland, for early-career researchers whose scientific background, research or expertise relates to climate change.

This is a chance to join the discussion, network, and learn from prominent climate scientists and experts participating in the IPCC assessment process. This event will provide background information on the assessment process, and perspectives from the scientific communities working on mountains, polar regions, and past climates on the challenges and prospects for research on climate change in these environments.

15. Major funding opportunity for ocean sustainability

Belmont Forum, Future Earth, and the Joint Programming Initiative Healthy and Productive Seas and Oceans (JPI Oceans), announce a call for proposals which aim to bring together researchers and experts across the globe to innovate solutions that accelerate sustainable use of oceans and minimize the effects from global change. Thematic areas for this funding opportunity were developed through a global scoping process lead by Future Earth, followed by additional consultations co-led by Future Earth and the Belmont Forum.

This Collaborative Research Action (CRA) call aims to contribute to the overall challenge of ocean sustainability, with the UN Sustainable Development Goal no. 14 (Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development) as the overall framework. Because the challenge is complex, there is a need for integrated, interdisciplinary and cross sectoral approaches, bringing together natural and social sciences, as well as policymakers, resource managers, industries, citizens and other societal partners.

A total of 14 funders from 12 countries have committed in total over 18 million dollars of cash and in-kind resources for this call: Brazil, France, Germany, Iceland, India, Japan, Philippines, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Sweden, and USA. Through the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA), researchers from Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Comoros and Madagascar are also eligible for this call.

The pre-registration system closes 31 January. All details: http://futureearth.org/news/belmont-forum-future-earth-and-jpi-oceans-launch-major-funding-call-ocean-sustainability
