1. Chinese Academy of Sciences now supporting PAGES
In case you missed last month's e-news, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) has joined the Swiss Academy of Sciences (SCNAT) as an official supporter of PAGES' activities. The cooperation agreement is valid for a minimum of eight years. CAS is classified as a special member of PAGES: http://pastglobalchanges.org/news/all-news-items/9-latest-news/2355. 2. PAGES 6th OSM and 4th YSM updates
PAGES' premier science conferences, the Open Science Meeting (OSM) and Young Scientists Meeting (YSM), are held every four years. The 6th OSM and 4th YSM will be held in Agadir, Morocco, from 16-22 May 2021. The YSM will be held from 16-18 May and the OSM from 18-22 May. Regional field trips and excursions of varying durations will be offered after the OSM. We look forward to welcoming you in Agadir: http://pages-osm.org
3. Apply to be on our SSC - deadline 24 Feb
PAGES' activities are guided by an international Scientific Steering Committee (SSC). PAGES is calling for applications from scientists to serve on its SSC from January 2021. We encourage applications from scientists in regions currently under-represented and welcome more female applicants. 4. Call for new working group applications - deadline 26 Feb
Does your heart pound for paleoscience? Know others who feel the same? Propose a new PAGES working group to address a scientific question in an internationally coordinated way. The application deadline is 26 February.
You must contact a member of the PAGES Scientific Steering Committee to discuss your plans at least two weeks before you submit the proposal. Applications received without SSC member notification will not be looked upon favorably. All details: http://pastglobalchanges.org/science/wg/new-wg-proposal
5. Call for meeting/workshop financial support applications - deadline 26 Feb
PAGES offers meeting support under three categories of workshops – PAGES' working group meetings; Educational meetings; and Open call meetings. The deadline for this round is 26 February.
The meeting or workshop should be scheduled to take place at least six months after the application deadline (i.e. preferably from September 2020 onwards). Applicants must contact an SSC member at least two weeks before the deadline to explain the meeting plan and how it is relevant to PAGES. 6. PAGES at SRI2020
The inaugural Sustainability Research and Innovation Congress, organized by the Belmont Forum and Future Earth, will be held from 14-17 June 2020 in Brisbane, Australia. PAGES members will conduct the session "Past global changes as indicators for future changes and strategies for sustainability". Abstracts close 16 February. See point 11 for all details.
7. Working Group news

ii. Four working groups concluded their activities at the end of 2019. DAPS, Forest Dynamics, Global Paleofire Working Group 2, and OC3 were active for between three and six years. PAGES thanks the working group leaders and members for all their efforts and hopes to see them involved in current or potential new groups in the future.
iii. ACME: The group's first workshop will be held before the European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly in Vienna, Austria, from 1-2 May 2020. PAGES has provided some financial support. See point 10 for all details.
iv. C-PEAT: The second workshop of the group's second phase has been announced for May 2020 in Bangkok, Thailand. PAGES has provided some financial support. See point 10 for all details.
v. C-SIDE: a. The group has the session "Southern Ocean - Past Global Linkages" at the 36th International Geological Congress from 2-8 March 2020 in Delhi, India. Standard registration closes 31 January. All details: http://pastglobalchanges.org/calendar/upcoming/127-pages/1955
b. The group's third workshop will be held in May 2021 (2021) in Bordeaux, France. PAGES has provided some financial support. See point 10 for all details.

vii. EcoRe3: a. The group is now in its final year and will hold its final workshop in March 2020 in Cape Town, South Africa. Funding has been provided for the attendance of three African early-career researchers living outside South Africa. See point 10 for all details.
b. A new paper on "Resilience: nitrogen limitation, mycorrhiza and long-term palaeoecological plant–nutrient dynamics" is available in the group's special feature of The Royal Society's Biology Letters. See point 8 for all details.
viii. Floods Working Group: The group has the session "Extreme Hydrological Event - Present and Past" at the 36th International Geological Congress from 2-8 March 2020 in Delhi, India. 8. Recent products
i. PAGES Executive Director Marie-France Loutre was involved in a new Nature Sustainability paper which proposes a set of four general principles that underlie high-quality knowledge co-production for sustainability research. Definitions of knowledge co-production are diverse and often contradictory. The authors define it as "iterative and collaborative processes involving diverse types of expertise, knowledge and actors to produce context-specific knowledge and pathways towards a sustainable future." ii. EcoRe3: Michael Bonsall, Cynthia Froyd and Elizabeth Jeffers use a mathematical framework to investigate the effects of plant feedbacks and mycorrhiza on plant–nutrient interactions, and show evidence for strong nutrient controlled feedbacks, moderation by mycorrhiza and influence on ecological resilience in their new paper. iii. LandCover6k: Laurent Marquer et al. published "Pollen-based reconstruction of Holocene land-cover in mountain regions: Evaluation of the Landscape Reconstruction Algorithm in the Vicdessos valley, northern Pyrenees, France" in Quaternary Science Reviews: http://pastglobalchanges.org/products/12963
iv. PlioVAR: The former PAGES working group has its first paper open for comments until 5 March in Climate of the Past Discussions. "Lessons from a high CO2 world: an ocean view from ~ 3 million years ago" by Erin McClymont et al. examines sea-surface temperature response to an interval of climate ~ 3.2 million years ago, when CO2 concentrations were similar to today and the near-future. Their geological data and climate models show that global mean sea-surface temperatures were 2.3 to 3.2 ºC warmer than pre-industrial climate, that the mid- and high-latitudes warmed more than the tropics, and that the warming was particularly enhanced in the North Atlantic Ocean: https://www.clim-past-discuss.net/cp-2019-161/
v. QUIGS: Bette Otto-Bliesner et al. have the paper "Large-scale features of Last Interglacial climate: Results from evaluating the lig127k simulations for CMIP6-PMIP4" open for discussion in Climate of the Past Discussions until 17 March. The CMIP6-PMIP4 lig127k simulations, in combination with the proxy record, have potential implications for confidence in future projections of monsoons, surface temperature, Arctic sea ice, and the stability of the Greenland ice sheet: https://www.clim-past-discuss.net/cp-2019-174/
vi. VICS: Zsolt Pinke et al. published "Volcanic mega-eruptions may trigger major cholera outbreaks" in Climate Research. The paper is also a contribution to the PAGES 2k Network and LandCover6k: http://pastglobalchanges.org/products/12964
9. PAGES Early-Career Network updates
i. Pre-register by 30 January for the PAGES-INQUA ECR workshop "Past Socio-Environmental Systems (PASES)" to be held from 9-13 November 2020 in La Serena y Coquimbo, Chile. This is not the final registration form for the workshop. That will be launched by March 2020. See point 10 for all details.
ii. The ECN is conducting a survey to gather information on how ECRs currently perceive and navigate the structures within PAGES. More specifically, they would like to understand the current status of ECR involvement in existing working groups, and identify current and future opportunities, as well as issues or obstacles that might be hindering ECR involvement. i. CarpClim: The newly endorsed Carpathian Climate and Environment Working Group (CarpClim) will hold a workshop in September 2020, supported by PAGES. See point 11 for all details.
ii. IPICS: The 3rd International Partnership in Ice Core Sciences (IPICS) Open Science Conference will be held from 18-23 October 2020 in Crans Montana, Switzerland. This conference is supported by PAGES. The theme is "Ice Core Science at the three Poles." This title is a reference to the pioneering work of Hans Oeschger on carbon dioxide in polar ice cores. 15. NOAA WDS-Paleo updates
Dr. Gene Wahl, former leader of NCEI's Paleoclimatology Group and Director of the World Data Service for Paleoclimatology (WDS-Paleoclimatology), retired on 31 December 2019. Dr. Wahl would like to thank everyone in the community for the opportunity to work with and serve among them since 1995, and in particular since joining NCEI in 2008.
Dr. Imke Durre, head of the Products Section in NCEI's Center for Weather and Climate, will serve as Acting Director of the WDS-Paleoclimatology until Dr. Wahl's position is filled. To ensure continuity across the upcoming transitions, the WDS Director can be reached at: wds-paleo@noaa.gov.

i. PAGES is supported by the Swiss Academy of Sciences (SCNAT). Their Sustainability Research Initiative aims to direct science towards sustainable development and Agenda 2030, thereby supporting the work on socially-relevant priority issues. ii. ERC Consolidator Grants: The European Research Council, set up by the European Union in 2007, is the premiere European funding organisation for excellent frontier research. Every year, it selects and funds the very best, creative researchers of any nationality and age, to run projects based in Europe. It offers four core grant schemes: Starting, Consolidator, Advanced and Synergy Grants. Researchers who would like to compete for an ERC Consolidator Grant have until 4 February to apply for the next round of funding. The ERC Consolidator Grants are awarded to outstanding researchers of any nationality and age, with at least seven and up to 12 years of experience after PhD, and a scientific track record showing great promise. Research must be conducted in a public or private research organisation located in one of the EU Member States or Associated Countries. The funding (average of €2 million per grant), is provided for up to five years and mostly covers the employment of researchers and other staff to consolidate the grantees' teams.

iii. The UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (https://www.oceandecade.org/) is conducting a survey of early-career ocean professionals (ECOPs) to identify ECRs interested in contributing to the Decade, set priority actions for the Decade, and identify key capacity gaps and challenges for ECOP engagement throughout the Decade.
