1. New Past Global Changes Magazine
The latest Past Global Changes Magazine "Climate Reconstruction and Impacts from the Archives of Societies" is now available to read online and download: http://pastglobalchanges.org/products/pages-magazine/13122
Historical climatology is the interdisciplinary research field that reconstructs past climates and weather and their societal impacts on the basis of written and physical records produced by people.
This issue of Past Global Changes Magazine presents papers on the current state of research in several world regions, as well as on new methods and the analysis of new sources in the field. It is a product of the PAGES Climate Reconstruction and Impacts from the Archives of Societies (CRIAS) working group: http://pastglobalchanges.org/crias

2. Winner of the first PAGES Early-Career Award
PAGES is pleased to announce the inaugural PAGES Early-Career Award (ECA) recipient is Dr Alicja Bonk. Alicja is an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Geography, University of Gdańsk, Poland. 3. PAGES Survey - deadline 14 February
Despite PAGES 6th Open Science Meeting (OSM) and 4th Young Scientists Meeting (YSM) being postponed from May 2021 to May 2022, we would still like to hear your thoughts on PAGES science. ii. 2k Network
a. Network leaders will conduct a webinar on 18 November to discuss Phase 3. See point 10 for all details.
b. CLIVASH2k project leaders announce a new community data call to expand the current PAGES 2k database by compiling a database of chemistry from Antarctic ice cores and possibly other archives spanning the past 2k. c. The AGU Fall Meeting session "Climate of the Common Era", which was previously run by 2k Network members for more than 10 years, continues! See point 9 for all details.

iii. Carbon in Peat on EArth through Time (C-PEAT)
a. The deadline for submission of charcoal data to the HOLOPEATFIRE project has been extended to 30 November. If you have any charcoal data from a peatland with an associated chronology and would like to be involved in the project, please contact Graeme Swindles. b. The group is involved in two sessions at the AGU Fall Meeting in December. See point 9 for all details.
c. The joint PAGES-INQUA workshop on tropical peatland processes and ecosystem services will be held in Bangkok, Thailand, in March 2021. See point 10 for all details.
iv. Climate Reconstruction and Impacts from the Archives of Societies (CRIAS)
a. Group members published a paper on Central European droughts in the 16th century. Previous studies related to historical droughts in the Czech Lands showed that the summers of 1531–1540 could represent the driest summer decade of the past 500 years. To confirm this hypothesis, documentary data from central Europe were collected and presented for individual summers and complemented by maps of precipitation and drought distribution to document corresponding weather patterns and their various impacts. The main droughts occurred in 1532, 1534–1536, 1538, and particularly in 1540. See point 8 for all details.
b. The group's third workshop will be held from 19-20 March 2021 in Hong Kong, and also online. See point 10 for all details.
c. Interested researchers are encouraged to offer reviews or submit relevant manuscripts for the Climate of the Past special issue "International methods and comparisons in climate reconstruction and impacts from archives of societies." For those of you who proposed manuscripts, note that the closing date is still April 2021 but earlier submissions would be much appreciated. v. Cycles of Sea-Ice Dynamics in the Earth system (C-SIDE)
Leaders announce a call for contributions to the group's Climate of the Past special issue "Reconstructing Southern Ocean sea-ice dynamics on glacial-to-historical timescales". Submission deadline is 31 December 2021, extendable if necessary. vi. Climate Variability Across Scales (CVAS)
a. Group leaders announce a new online seminar series from November to March. "Climate variability across scales: from the butterfly’s wings to the age of the Earth" is a series of eight lectures. The first presentation, from Juerg Schmidli, is now available on PAGES YouTube channel. See point 10 for all details.
b. The workshop "Beyond Palaeoclimate Ping Pong: Improving estimates of past climate variability by consistent data-model comparison" scheduled for 3-6 December 2020 in Heidelberg, Germany, has been postponed until July 2021. See point 10 for all details.
vii. LandCover6k
The group's 4th General Workshop will hopefully be held in 2021. Given current circumstances, the organizers at the University of Pennsylvania, USA, are assessing the possibilities. Announcements will be made when available. See point 10 for all details.
viii. PALeo constraints on SEA level rise (PALSEA)
a. The group will conduct a joint session with QUIGS at the AGU Fall Meeting in December. See point 9 for all details.
b. A long-term PALSEA goal is to create standardized sea-level databases. In 2019, they achieved a milestone goal thanks to the work of Nicole Khan and the HOLSEA community. For the Holocene, there is now a series of regional databases compiled using a unique framework: http://pastglobalchanges.org/products/special-issues/12887. A similar goal for the Last Interglacial is being pursued via the European Research Council led by group leader Alessio Rovere, in close collaboration with PALSEA. Several authors are compiling data into the World Atlas of Last Interglacial Shorelines, and a special issue of Earth System Science Data is underway: https://essd.copernicus.org/articles/special_issue1055.html. The journal follows a "discussion forum" format and the first papers are already posted, therefore anyone is free to read the preprints and leave comments.
ix. PalEOclimate and the PeopLing of the Earth (PEOPLE 3000)
The "Understanding long-term human-environment feedback loops through the integration of archaeology, paleoclimate and ecological models" workshop in Arica, Chile, has been postponed. Potential new dates could be in January or March 2021. See point 10 for all details.
x. PAGES-PMIP Working Group on Quaternary Interglacials (QUIGS)
a. Day two of the virtual QUIGS-IFG meeting on glacial terminations is 12 November 2020. See point 10 for all details.
b. The next in-person workshop, in Cassis, France, will be held from 21-23 September 2021. See point 10 for all details.
c. The group will conduct a joint session with PALSEA at the AGU Fall Meeting in December. See point 9 for all details.
xi. Speleothem Isotopes Synthesis and AnaLysis (SISAL)
a. The manuscript presenting the second version of the SISAL database has been published in Earth System Science Data. See point 8 for all details. The database is available in SQL and CSV format here: http://doi.org/10.17864/1947.256
b. A Phase 2 community meeting will be held online, twice, on 19 November. The meeting will include discussions of future steps and plans for the working group as well as two presentations of recent SISAL science. All are invited. See point 10 for all details.
c. Congratulations to Steering Group member Franziska Lechleitner on being awarded the 2021 EGU Outstanding Early Career Scientist Award in the Climate: Past, Present & Future (CL) Division. See point 9 for all details.
d. Comments are open until 5 December for a discussion paper using the latest SISALv2 database to evaluate three transient iHadCM3 simulations over the last millennium. xii. Volcanic Impacts on Climate and Society (VICS)
a. Group leaders have proposed the session "Understanding volcano-climate impacts and the stratospheric aerosol layer" at the 2021 EGU. See point 9 for all details.
b. The next VICS workshop will be held from 8-10 March 2021 online and in Aarhus, Denmark. On-site participants can interact with an exhibition on volcanism and society at the Moesgård Museum. See point 10 for all details.
c. The deadline for submissions to the VICS special issue "Interdisciplinary studies of volcanic impacts on climate and society" in Climate of the Past has been extended to 31 May 2021. 7. PAGES Early-Career Network (ECN) updates
i. New Science Cluster
The new Science Cluster intends to provide a platform that connects early-career researchers who want to develop and exchange ideas, as well as to expand their scientific network. Plans are to organize virtual meetings, where participants can discuss their ideas for potential collaboration, in particular with respect to writing collaborative papers, applying for joint project funding, starting a new PAGES Working Group or any other collaborative scientific initiatives. i. PAGES acknowledged in new pollen paper
A new Earth-Science Reviews paper by Manuel Chevalier et al. acknowledges PAGES support for the attendance of early-career researchers at a PCMIP pollen conference in 2017. "Pollen-based climate reconstruction techniques for late Quaternary studies" addresses the fundamental aspects of fossil pollen data that should be considered when undertaking pollen-based climate reconstructions and suggests methods and products that could be developed to facilitate accessibility and global usability: http://pastglobalchanges.org/products/13117

iii. Speleothem Isotopes Synthesis and AnaLysis (SISAL)
A data description paper for version two of the SISAL database is now available. Group leader Laia Comas-Bru thanks SISAL members and the wider speleothem community for this achievement. iv. Volcanic Impacts on Climate and Society (VICS)
The first paper in the VICS' special issue "Interdisciplinary studies of volcanic impacts on climate and society" is available in Climate of the Past. Matías Frugone-Álvarez et al. performed a multidisciplinary study on a transect of sediment cores to reconstruct the depositional evolution of the high-elevation Laguna del Maule (LdM) (36∘ S, 2180 m a.s.l., Chilean Andes). The recovered 5 m composite sediment sequence includes two thick turbidite units (LT1 and LT2) and numerous tephra layers (23 ash and 6 lapilli). 9. AGU Fall Meeting 2020 and EGU General Assembly 2021 updates
i. AGU 2020
The AGU Fall Meeting will be held online and in San Francisco, USA, in December 2020. Content will include real-time sessions, networking opportunities and poster hall time. With all of this content, the Fall Meeting will be concentrated from 7-11 December and events will be extended around the meeting from 1-17 December. There will be recorded sessions so you can watch at your convenience. Convergent themes including global science policy, data, natural hazards, and climate science will be prominently featured. ii. EGU 2021 - new format
a. The EGU General Assembly will be held entirely online from 19-30 April 2021. The new conference is titled vEGU21: Gather Online (#vEGU21). b. The EGU has named the 51 recipients of next year's Union Medals and Awards, Division Medals, and Division Outstanding Early Career Scientist Awards. i. CarpClim
a. The PAGES-endorsed Carpathian Climate and Environment Working Group (CarpClim) workshop will now be held in 2021. The program remains the same and the new dates will be announced as soon as possible. See point 11 for all details.
b. An open-air laboratory has been established in the Carpathians at the Carpathian Interdisciplinary Research Center (CIRC): http://geoconcept.ro/circ/. CarpClim leaders are looking to collect secondhand (or over used) lab and field equipment from partners in Europe. The equipment should still be functional but not used anymore (old fashioned, not updated, needing repair, etc). Shipping would be paid for by CIRC. ii. IODP
a. Charna Meth is the new Executive Director of the IODP Science Support Office at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, replacing Holly Given who has retired: http://iodp.org/resources
b. The international scientific ocean drilling community recently released the "2050 Science Framework: Exploring Earth by Scientific Ocean Drilling" that provides guidance on multidisciplinary subseafloor research into the interconnected processes that characterize the complex Earth system and shape our planet’s future. The Framework focuses on the many ways in which scientific ocean drilling will increase understanding of the fundamental connections among Earth system components while addressing a range of challenging natural and human-caused issues facing society. The Framework calls for strong collaboration among Earth science disciplines and allied international research programs to meet scientific goals and promotes communication of results to a broad global audience. The PAGES-supported 3rd International Partnership in Ice Core Sciences (IPICS) Open Science Conference scheduled for 18-23 October 2020 in Crans Montana, Switzerland, will now be held from 10-15 October 2021. See point 11 for all details.

i. Extraordinary Joint Scientific Committee Session

ICYMI! The IPCC Executive Committee has reviewed changes to the Sixth Assessment Report strategic planning schedule. Among other changes, the IPCC has extended the cut-off date for scientific literature to be included in the contribution of the Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) of Working Group I to 31 January 2021. ii. Call for proposals
The French Foundation for Biodiversity Research opens a call for research projects, to fund at least three innovative projects relating to the synthesis of ideas and concepts and/or the analysis of existing data. The main aim of these projects should be to improve scientific knowledge of biodiversity and demonstrate how we can use this knowledge to better protect it. The submitted projects can deal with any topic related to biodiversity, in the fields of natural sciences or human and social sciences.
