Keep up to date with all announcements and find out more about the program: https://www.pages-osm.org/

2. PAGES' new website - launching May 2021

The PAGES website is currently being revamped and upgraded, with the launch set for May. We hope you enjoy a more interactive and modern experience. An email will soon be sent to subscribers who have not been recently contacted, asking you to confirm or update your account details. We'd like the new People Database to be as fresh and current as the website design itself!

9. Recent products

i. 2k Network PALEOLINK project
The fundamental quantity for understanding how our climate will change in the future and how sensitive the Earth's climate is to increases in atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide is the change in the Earth's energy content and its temporal evolution; that is, the way the Earth responds to additional atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases. To estimate the continental energy, PALEOLINK members analyzed 1024 datasets of underground temperature and their variation with depth measured from the surface to a depth of 300 m in their Climate of the Past paper "Long-term global ground heat flux and continental heat storage from geothermal data": http://pastglobalchanges.org/products/journal-articles/13172

ii. CVAS
The second last CVAS seminar series presentation, by Mario Trieloff from the University of Heidelberg, Germany, is titled "Climate variability on time scales of 100 Myr: stabilisation through the carbonate silicate cycle (and origin of planetary atmospheres)". The recording is available on PAGES' YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pu8-MCwDo_8

iii. ECN Show-and-Tell seminar series
Daniel Killam's presentation of his "living lab space" at Biosphere 2 in Arizona, USA, where he works with giant clams is now available to watch on the ECN YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ToxouapJLVE

iv. Ocean Circulation and Carbon Cycling (OC3)
A new carbon isotope model data comparison study by Juan Muglia and Andreas Schmittner from the PAGES' former working group OC3 was published in Quaternary Science Reviews. The pair present a detailed analysis of the skill of carbon isotopes to constrain past ocean circulation configurations in their paper "Carbon isotope constraints on glacial Atlantic meridional overturning: Strength vs depth": http://pastglobalchanges.org/products/journal-articles/13166

v. SISAL
a. Members published a "Science Update" in Eos on the power of paleoclimate databases as tools for improving climate models. "Improving access to paleoclimate data", by Nikita Kaushal et al., also explains how SISAL has reached out beyond the speleothem community and established collaborations with researchers from other paleoclimate disciplines: http://pastglobalchanges.org/products/journal-articles/13167
b. Andy Baker et al. used the SISAL database in "The properties of annually laminated stalagmites ‐ a global synthesis" published in Reviews of Geophysics: http://pastglobalchanges.org/products/journal-articles/13170

The first presentation recording from the VICS seminar series "Worst-case thinking: Past eruptions and volcanic risk analysis", with speakers Gordon Woo and Amy Donovan, is now available on the VICS playlist on PAGES' YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLSaCdvmD4wMLAqMng0RC0WORqEJBiZko1
b. Peter Abbott et al. published the third paper in the group's special issue of Climate of the Past. "Cryptotephra from the Icelandic Veiðivötn 1477 CE eruption in a Greenland ice core: confirming the dating of volcanic events in the 1450s CE and assessing the eruption's climatic impact" confirms the accuracy of a recent Greenland ice-core chronology over the middle to late 15th century and corroborates the findings of recent volcanic reconstructions from Greenland and Antarctica: http://pastglobalchanges.org/products/special-issues/13168
c. Ulrike Niemeier, Felix Riede and Claudia Timmreck published the fourth paper in the group's special issue. To better understand the impact of a Laacher See-type eruption on NH circulation and climate, the authors simulated the evolution of its fine ash and sulfur cloud with an interactive stratospheric aerosol model. "Simulation of ash clouds after a Laacher See-type eruption" offers new insights into the dispersion of volcanic clouds in midlatitudes and addresses a likely behavior of the ash cloud of the Laacher See eruption that darkened European skies at the end of the Pleistocene: http://pastglobalchanges.org/products/special-issues/13171

vii. Workshop paper
Liang Emlyn Yang et al. published "Social resilience and its scale effects along the historical Tea-Horse Road" in Environmental Research Letters. The study explores social resilience to major natural disasters along the Tea-Horse Road (THR) in southwest China and to understand why and how the THR and its communities maintained and developed a connection over a long period: http://pastglobalchanges.org/products/journal-articles/13169. This paper is an outcome of the PAGES-supported workshop "The Rise and Fall: Environmental Factors in the Socio-Cultural Changes of the Ancient Silk Road Area" held in Kiel, Germany, in September 2017.
