1. PAGES 30th anniversary issue of Past Global Changes Magazine
30 years of PAGES: Past - Present - Future: This issue of Past Global Changes Magazine celebrates the 30th anniversary of the PAGES project. Since its formation in 1991, PAGES has been at the forefront of paleoscience research. Here we present both a retrospective look at the past 30 years, and also look to the future. 3. New PAGES-IAI Fellowship Program
PAGES and the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) are pleased to announce a new fellowship opportunity for Latin American and Caribbean early-career scientists.
The International Mobility Research Fellowship Program supports Latin American and Caribbean early-career scientists pursuing international research experience in paleoscience. It will cover the costs associated with travel and living expenses while abroad. This program, which will run for a minimum of two years, will support up to six fellowships per year.
The call for applications is now open. Fellowships will be awarded for a short duration (one to three months) and must be used within 12 months. The deadline for applications is 30 September at 23:00 UYT (02:00 UTC 1 October): http://pastglobalchanges.org/my-pages/pages-iai-fellowship

5. PAGES' 6th OSM & 4th YSM in May 2022
PAGES' 6th Open Science Meeting (OSM) and 4th Young Scientists Meeting (YSM) will be held in May 2022 in Agadir, Morocco. The new tentative dates are YSM: 15-17 May 2022; OSM: 17-21 May 2022. Field trips start from 22 May.
The events were postponed from May 2021 because of coronavirus health and travel restrictions. These tentative dates will be reassessed again in August, when we'll hopefully have a better idea of how the situation is unfolding. PAGES 2k data were used in a recent Nature Communications paper, by Ulf Büntgen et al., which reports the results of a double-blind experiment that yielded 15 Northern Hemisphere summer temperature reconstructions from a common network of regional tree-ring-width datasets. See point 8 for all details.
c. CLIVASH2k: The call for papers is now open for the second special issue in Geoscience "Climate Variability in Antarctica and the Southern Hemisphere over the Last Millennia Volume 2". iii. Arctic Cryosphere Change and Coastal Marine Ecosystems (ACME): http://pastglobalchanges.org/acme
a. Save the date! The postponed 2020 workshop "Towards reliable proxy-based reconstructions: community perspectives and criteria for the ACME database" will be held from 25-27 October 2021 in Tvärminne, Finland, and also online. One of the main ACME goals is to build a community-refined database for proxies commonly used for environmental reconstructions in Arctic coastal and fjord environments. b. Status update: Shortly after the ACME WG was launched in 2020, leaders undertook an anonymous community survey and had a dedicated session at EGU 2020, CR 7.1 Cryosphere Change Impacts on Marine Ecosystems and Biogeochemical Cycling, co-organized by Ocean Sciences, Cryosphere Sciences and Biogeosciences. The main results of the community survey have been incorporated in an invited review that the steering group have recently written titled "The potential of palaeoecology to predict the future of coastal marine ecosystems in the rapidly changing Arctic" which is in review in the journal Anthropocene. Leaders will keep you updated on the status of this publication where ACME members and anonymous survey participants will be duly acknowledged. They will also discuss the main findings of this survey at the workshop (point a., above), as a starting point for further discussions.
iv. Carbon in Peat on EArth through Time (C-PEAT): http://pastglobalchanges.org/c-peat
a. Peatland Pavilion at COP26 in Glasgow, UK, November 2021: C-PEAT has put in a bid to be a part of the Global Peatland Initiative's Peatland Pavilion. Group leaders Julie Loisel and Angela Gallego-Sala proposed four activities that aim to familiarize the public with the importance of peatlands as paleo-archives, peatland degradation, and peat-carbon protection as a nature-based climate solution. Some funding has been provided by PAGES to help develop the proposed activities. Depending on the leaders' resources, they might ask for small favors from a few C-PEAT volunteers, including sending them peat samples from your country. Updates will be provided next month. b. b. LandCover6k is in its second and last phase. Group leader Marie-José Gaillard will finish her tenure with the final working group annual report which will be submitted in March 2022. However, this does not mean that LandCover6k science-related activities will stop. Discussions are ongoing and alternatives are being discussed in relation to future plans. i. Joint GEOTRACES-PAGES workshop
Two new papers resulting from the joint GEOTRACES-PAGES workshop in 2018 are now available in Global Biogeochemical Cycles:
a. Jesse Farmer et al. compile water column carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and silicon (Si) stable isotopes from GEOTRACES-era data in four key ocean regions to review geochemical proxies of oceanic carbon and nutrient cycling based on the C, N, and Si isotopic composition of marine sediments. "Assessment of C, N and Si isotopes as tracers of past ocean nutrient and carbon cycling" highlights opportunities for future research using multielement stable isotope proxy applications and emphasizes the importance of such applications to reconstructing past changes in the oceans and climate system: http://pastglobalchanges.org/products/journal-articles/13275
b. Tristan Horner et al. study phytoplankton productivity to understand past atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations and Earth's climate history. Several bioactive trace metals and their isotopes are potential proxies for past phytoplankton productivity, including: iron, zinc, copper, cadmium, molybdenum, barium, nickel, chromium, and silver. They review the oceanic distributions, driving processes, and depositional archives for these nine metals and their isotopes based on GEOTRACES-era datasets in the paper "Bioactive trace metals and their isotopes as paleoproductivity proxies: An assessment using GEOTRACES-era data": http://pastglobalchanges.org/products/journal-articles/13276
ii. Co-production paper
A new paper from a collaboration of several Future Earth Global Research Projects, including PAGES, plus the Swiss Academy of Sciences and the University of Bern is now available in Current Opinion in Environmental Sustainability. Flurina Schneider et al. address the question of how global sustainability-oriented research networks can engage in co-production of knowledge and action, and introduce a strategic tool called the "network compass" which highlights four generic, interrelated fields of action through which networks can strive to foster co-production: http://pastglobalchanges.org/products/journal-articles/13279

vii. Hominin Dispersals Research Group (HDRG)
HDRG leader Ariane Burke is the new visiting scientist at the Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research (OCCR) in Bern, Switzerland. She is hosted by the Earth System Modelling-Atmospheric Dynamics group for a sabbatical year as of June 2021. Ariane is a full professor at the Université de Montreal (Laboratoire d'Ecomorphologie et de Paleoanthropologie), Canada. While in Bern, she will work with colleagues at the OCCR designing new research focussed on assessing the impact of climate variability and ecological risk on prehistoric human populations living in Europe during the last glacial period. She will also continue working with the HDRG, which involves creating models of habitat suitability with the goal of comparing how Neanderthals and modern humans reacted to environmental transformations at the end of marine isotope stage 3 (MIS 3).

WCRP is holding a series of regionally-based Climate Research Forums. iv. WCRP Open Science Conference 2023
The WCRP Open Science Conference 2023, tentatively scheduled for March 2023, will bring together diverse research communities, programmes and partners to discuss the latest developments in climate science, with an emphasis on science-based information for decision making. The Conference will also celebrate the achievements of WCRP's Grand Challenges which will close at the end of 2022. i. EGU Public Engagement Grants 2021
Applications for the EGU Public Engagement Grants close 18 June. ii. South American Drought Atlas Explorer
The Center for Climate and Resilience Research (CR)2 has launched the South American Drought Atlas Explorer: https://sada.cr2.cl/. The Explorer uses the austral summer month (DJF) interannual variations of the Palmer Drought Severity Index (scPDSI) for the last 600 years reconstructed from tree-ring records: https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2002411117. Through the Explorer, it is possible to visualize annual drought maps, generate mean composite maps, correlation maps with other variables, as well as the extraction of time series of the scPDSI and the percentage of area under different drought thresholds for particular territories and regions: http://www.cr2.cl/eng/data-dendro-sada/
iii. The Micropalaeontological Society's Foraminifera Festival 2021
Festival Coordinators invite you to the TMS Foraminifera Festival: a virtual foram-themed day of talks and posters on 27 August, 06:00-18:00 UTC, on Zoom. vi. INQUA Award: the Sir Nicholas Shackleton Medal for outstanding young Quaternary scientists
Nominations are invited for the 2021 Award of the Sir Nicholas Shackleton Medal, which is awarded to an early-career scientist, who will normally be less than 40 years of age or, if older, within eight years of completing their first PhD project.
