In this month’s PAGES newsletter you can find out more about the PAGES Open Science Meeting (OSM) and Young Scientists Meeting (YSM) in 2025, as well as a few other updates at the IPO, including a very important notice on the new Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP)/GDPR and what that means for you as a PAGES subscriber. There are also a number of great new publications from working groups, and an Early-Career Network (ECN) call for speakers for the webinar series ‘Expanding our knowledge in the study of global changes’.

1. PAGES 7th Open Science Meeting and 5th Young Scientists Meeting
Save the date for PAGES’ flagship events, the Open Science Meeting (OSM) and Young Scientists Meeting (YSM) which will be taking place in Shanghai, China. The YSM, which traditionally takes place before the OSM, will be from 19–20 May 2025, with the OSM following from 21–24 May 2025. The meetings will focus on “the Earth System Changes from the Past towards the Future”. This conference aims to promote interdisciplinary scientific exchange and international collaboration, and to strengthen the connections between PAGES communities. By integrating various spheres of the Earth's system, this conference will illustrate the changes in the key components of the Earth's surface system (air, water, ice, land, life, society, etc.) across timescales, with the ultimate goal of improving predictions for future climate and environment. 2. Call for nominations for PAGES Early-Career Award
The PAGES ECA honors people in the early stages of their career (PhD students and <5 years after their PhD) for their engagement both within and beyond the scientific community, for example through (but not limited to) involvement in science coordination, outreach, networking, leadership activities, development of international collaborations and for excellence in research in support of PAGES’ goals. The Award will be publicly presented by PAGES at the next Open Science Meeting (OSM) in Shanghai in 2025. The awardee will receive a certificate, an invitation to present at the OSM, and a conference grant to attend the OSM (max. 2000 USD). The deadline to submit nominations is 31 October 2023. > More information
3. Order a hard copy of the next Past Global Changes Magazine
The next PAGES Magazine will focus on ice cores and new developments in analytical techniques. There will be one Science Highlight article from each DEEPICE (Research and training network on understanding Deep icE corE Proxies to Infer past antarctiC climatE dynamics) early-career researcher, and also contributions from the ICYS (Ice Core Young Scientists) network. The magazine is scheduled to be published at the end of October 2023. If you would like to order a hard copy, please complete the webform online by 27 October 2023. Please note that this is the only way to ensure you receive a hard copy of the magazine, so please don’t forget to complete the form if you are interested. > More information

The recording of the PAGES 9th webinar on "Ethics in publishing and combatting predatory practices in science" which took place on 7 September 2023 with Dr. Ramón Feenstra (Universitat Jaume I de Castelló, Spain) and Dr. Asfawossen Asrat Kassaye (Botswana International University of Science and Technology, Botswana) is available to watch on the PAGES YouTube channel. > Watch
6. Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP)/ GDPR
The new Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP) went into effect on 1 September 2023. This means PAGES must ensure compliance with this new data law. The main aim of this update is to grant subscribers and members stronger self-determination in relation to their own data. An email has been sent to you via the PAGES database subscriber list. We ask you to please take a moment to either AGREE or DISAGREE to PAGES' use of your data by responding directly to that email. If you do not agree, PAGES will hide your data, and, after 30 days, delete all your data from the database. In practical terms, this means you will no longer have a profile in the PAGES people database, no longer receive the newsletter, and no longer be able to take advantage of the services provided by the PAGES IPO (pastgloblachanges.org, nextcloud.pastgloblachanges.org, passbolt.pastgloblachanges.org). Thank you for your continued support, and apologies for the inconvenience. ii. 2k Network
Falster G et al. have published a new paper in Nature on "Forced changes in the Pacific Walker circulation over the past millennium". The reconstruction is based on proxy records from the Iso2k database, which is a contribution to Phases 3 and 4 of the PAGES 2k Network. > Access article
iii. Synthesizing human traces in the stratigraphic record (Human Traces)
a. The PAGES supported Human Traces workshop on "Pb pollution in lake sediments - creating a database for analysis of regional signals" will be taking place from 20–21 September in Liverpool, UK. > Calendar
b. The online seminar series will be starting again 25 September with Nicolás Zanetta presenting "The metal revolution for Sustainable Development: missing the local scale". > All details
iv. Speleothem Isotopes Synthesis and AnaLysis (SISAL)
a. SISAL has released "The SISAL webApp". This app aims to construct a web-based interface to access the SISAL database using an online web app, with a user-friendly GUI front-end to increase SISAL database accessibility. With the help of a PAGES Data Stewardship Scholarship (DSS), SISAL has created the simple, user-friendly app, thereby accomplishing one of the main DSS project goals. The group welcomes comments, feedback or suggestions for future desired options (within reason). Please feel free to contact the SISAL working group members. Call for speakers: webinar series ‘Expanding our knowledge in the study of global changes’
The PAGES ECN Regional Representatives for Latin America are preparing to run a webinar series ‘Expanding our knowledge in the study of global changes’ which will take place in the second half of 2023. It is specifically designed for students and early-career researchers in the study of climate and global changes from their different areas. “The series aims to bring new perspectives to the study of past global changes, as well as encouraging enhanced collaboration, multidisciplinary approaches, and open science among early-career researchers. The organizers are currently seeking speakers (you, your colleagues, or your students) to address a wide number of webinar topics, e.g. Quaternary paleoecology and nature conservation and Human health and paleoenvironment: Exploring the connections, amongst many others. 10. Future Earth
Future Earth Seeks Applicants for 2023 Early-Career Fellowship (ECF)
Launched in 2023, the ECF is a pilot program which "aims to implement the development concept of innovation, coordination, green, openness, and sharing, and help promote the achievement of sustainable development goals... The mission of the ECF program is to provide a forum in which early-career researchers from various disciplines (e.g., natural, social, and human sciences) can share their interdisciplinary research, pursue unique collaborations, and build a network of colleagues who can share their interest in improving the global sustainable development goals". The funds are relatively unrestricted and recipients can work relatively independently with flexibility and a built-in support network during their tenure as a fellow. i. Submissions open to a Virtual Special Issue (VSI) on marine sedaDNA in the Journal Marine Micropaleontology
Submissions are currently open until 31 December 2024 for a Special Issue in Marine Micropaleontology that focuses on "The invisible complement: using sedimentary ancient DNA (sedaDNA) to improve marine ecosystem reconstructions". This Special Issue will be guest edited by Dr. Linda Armbrecht, Dr. Heike Zimmermann, Prof. Dr. Stijn DeSchepper and Dr. Xavier Crosta. Sedimentary ancient DNA (sedaDNA) offers a novel approach to investigating past ecosystems—from the smallest bacteria to plankton and their predators. Knowledge about paleo-ecosystems can provide broad-scale biological context to paleoceanographic reconstructions from polar to tropical environments and over up to ~2Ma. However, sedaDNA research is complicated by the miniscule amounts of DNA preserved and limited reference sequences and genomes, making it difficult to detect rare species. This session seeks to bring together the latest research aimed at improving environmental reconstructions using sedaDNA techniques. The editors encourage interdisciplinary studies that combine sedaDNA research with aspects of micropaleontology, biomarker, geochemical and/or modern DNA research. Technical (field, laboratory, computational optimisations, statistical tools) as well as (paleo)ecologically focused research articles are welcomed. > More information
ii. EGU - Call for Session Proposals
The next EGU will be taking place from 14–19 April 2024 at the Austria Center Vienna (ACV), and will be in hybrid format. The organizing committee invites those interested to take an active part in organizing the scientific program of the conference - they are calling for scientific sessions, Union Symposia, Great Debates, and Short Courses. iii. Beyond-EPICA Ice Core (BE OI) seminar series
The co-chairs of the EU Beyond-EPICA Ice Core (BE OI) Climate and Carbon Cycle feedback Consortium will be organizing a short online seminar series during the Northern Hemisphere autumn of 2023. The series aims to provide "an update on advances related to paleoclimate reconstructions and simulations across the MPT and to our understanding of this major climatic transition based on proxy records from natural archives and climate modelling efforts." There will be a seminar once a month between September and December 2023 from 12:00–13:00 UTC with two speakers working on related topics. > Calendar
iv. New publication: "Ramsar Wetlands: Values, Assessment, Management"
PAGES congratulates former Scientific Steering Committee member, Peter Gell, and his co-authors Nick Davidson and Max Finlayson on the publication of their book "Ramsar Wetlands: Values, Assessment, Management". This Elsevier volume “was very much driven by the collaborations developed at a PAGES meeting in 2014 in Australia, and built upon through the Aquatic Transitions working group”. > Access the book
v. SCAR Instabilities and thresholds in Antarctica (INSTANT) Conference 2023
The PAGES supported INSTANT conference takes place from 11–14 September in Trieste, Italy. The program is available on the website, and a number of events will be advertised on the various social media profiles, such as the documentary screening of “Into the Ice” by Lars Ostenfeld, Denmark, Germany / 2022 which has limited seating. > Calendar
