In this month’s newsletter you can find out more about what the PAGES working groups are up to. This includes the launch of a new online seminar by Climate Variability Across Scales (CVAS), and dates and information of upcoming workshops for DiverseK, Disentangling climate and pre-industrial human impacts on marine ecosystems (Q-MARE), and Volcanic Impacts on Climate and Society (VICS). In addition, there is a reminder that applications to serve on the PAGES Early-Career Network Steering Committee are due by December 2.

1. Call for SSC nominations open
PAGES would like to remind you that that the call for applications from scientists to serve on the Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) for the term starting January 2024 is open until 5 April 2023. > SSC membership applications
2. Call for Horizons contributions
You may or may not have heard about Horizons magazine published by PAGES; Past Global Changes Horizons: Picture the past. Change the future is fast becoming a popular science magazine, aimed primarily at the younger generation, budding scientists, and all those enthusiasts, both young and old, who are interested in, or want to learn more about, the science of the past. The call for contributions to the next Horizons issue, to be published in September/October 2023 is open. > More information

ii. Carbon in Peat on Earth through Time (C-PEAT)
The “State of the Worlds Peatlands - Global Peatlands Assessment: Evidence for action toward peatlands conservation” event will be taking place on 17 November from 13:15-14:45 EET at COP27 and can be viewed via live stream.
This event will reflect on the importance and impact of the Global Peatland Assessment (GPA) within the global context of the Global Peatlands Initiative (GPI) and the UNEA-4 Resolution on the Conservation and Sustainable Management of Peatlands, where a baseline for a Global Peatlands Inventory was requested in 2019 by all member states. The event will also highlight the collaborative process of the GPA and acknowledge the cooperation between hundreds of peatland experts from all around the world to establish the state of the world’s peatlands. The updated Global Peatland Map will be showcased in detail, explaining its input information, spatial data generation, collation approaches, and the current gaps in coverage and resolution. > Access live stream
iii. Climate Variability Across Scales (CVAS)
a. The group has launched a new online seminar series on “Proxy System Modelling” which will take place (mainly) Tuesdays at 15:00 CET (14:00 UTC). In this seminar series, they will approach the topic from different proxies with the most exhaustive approach possible, and collected contributions covering a wide range of proxies such as lake and marine sediments, pollen archives, glacier and ice, corals, clams and sclerosponges, speleothems, dendrochronological records, etc. The first seminar was held on 15 November, and the second seminar will take place on Thursday, 01 December. > Calendar
b. In their paper published in Nature Geoscience, Hébert et al argue that accurate projections of variations in regional temperature are weak, despite having widespread implications for societies. The authors provide "a comprehensive estimate of regional temperature variability from annual to millennial timescales". The authors do this by "performing spectral analysis on climate reconstructions, produced using sedimentary pollen records from the Northern Hemisphere over the last 8,000 years, coupled with instrumental data". > Article
iv. Integrating diverse knowledge systems for environmental policy (DiverseK)
Save the date! The PAGES-supported DiverseK workshop "Challenges and opportunities for Paleo-informed ecosystem conservation in Asia" will be taking place from 13-16 May 2023 in Beijing, China. Details will be announced as soon as these are available. > Calendar
v. Synthesizing human traces in the stratigraphic record (Human Traces)
Human Traces held an online workshop on 8 November to discuss Holocene scale sediment lead (Pb) records in lake and peat archives. Following a presentation on Greenland ice core Pb records by Professor Joe McConnell at an earlier Human Traces workshop, a discussion identified the need to link environmental archives more fully to address some specific questions about regionality of long-transported atmospheric Pb pollution. The group aims to assemble lake and peat sediment lead records from around the world for comparison with these high-resolution ice-core records, and to produce a database that will be of wider use to the paleo community. The group will also be reviewing methodological approaches to collecting lead sediment records and producing a global synthesis of Pb records. vi. Marine ARctic DIatoms (MARDI)
The working group is thrilled to have launched, and encourages everyone interested to please join the MARDI mailing list. The central aim of MARDI is to improve diatom-based quantitative reconstructions of (sub-)Arctic ocean conditions and for that they want to combine all existing counts of diatom assemblages in surface samples. So, if you have such data and are willing to contribute this to the MARDI effort, please get in touch with the group. If you are not ready to commit your data now and you would rather wait and see what they are up to, that is also fine, but it would still be great to have an overview (i.e. a list of coordinates of surface samples) of what you potentially could contribute with at a later stage. They will keep the data confidential while they integrate the various datasets and align the taxonomies, but by the end of MARDI Phase 1 (and hopefully earlier), they plan to make everything publicly available. When the time comes to publish the synthesis, all contributors will naturally be asked to co-author possible publications. > Contact the steering committee
vii. PALeo constraints on SEA level rise (PALSEA)
The group would like to inform those attending the AGU this year that they will be organizing a social meet-up on Monday evening (12 December). viii. Disentangling climate and pre-industrial human impacts on marine ecosystems (Q-MARE)
a. The recording of the seminar held on 2 November with Dr. Jan Steger on "Patterns and ecological impacts of the Lessepsian invasion – novel insights from molluscan living and death assemblages" is now available to watch on the PAGES YouTube channel. > Watch recording

c. Q-MARE is organising a workshop on "Geohistorical perspectives on functional connectivity patterns" in Sesimbra, Portugal, from 22-25 May 2023. This workshop will form part of the Symposium on Human Impacts on Marine Functional Connectivity co-organized by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) and the COST-Action SEA-UNICORN. > Calendar
ix. Speleothem Isotopes Synthesis and AnaLysis (SISAL)
a. SISAL steering committee member, Yassine Ait Brahim, and regional coordinator, Andrea Columbu will be organizing a special issue to be published in Quaternary Research on "New developments in speleothem paleoclimate and paleoenvironmental science". The Deadline for submissions is 31 December. b. Data submissions for SISALv3 are now closed. The SISAL steering committee is working hard on quality checks and putting together the new database version and accompanying publication. The groups thanks everyone who contributed.

x. Volcanic Impacts on Climate and Society (VICS)
The fifth VICS workshop, originally scheduled to take place in Aarhus, Denmark, in 2020, will be taking place from 22-24 May 2023 in Bern, Switzerland. This workshop will extend the range of interest deeper into the past, as well as into the future, and mark the end of Phase 2 of the VICS working group. The group is planning to enable remote participation for the talks, but encourage in-person attendance. More information will be provided as soon as this is available. > Calendar

ii. The ECN would like to remind you that applications to serve on the PAGES ECN Steering Committee are due on 2 December. Please consider applying (or encouraging someone you think would be suitable) for this role if you are a graduate student or recent MSc/PhD with strong interest in supporting early-career networking in the paleosciences and are eager to contribute to PAGES and PAGES ECN goals and activities. Your volunteer participation as a Steering Committee member will give you the opportunity to help shape the early-career paleoscience landscape, make you more visible among a wide network of peers, and provide valuable leadership experience to draw upon in future roles. The SC meets every two weeks to organize ongoing and future activities, manage communications and updates among activity clusters, members, and the larger PAGES and ECN communities, and ensure the ECN is effectively supporting its goals. The group have published a special issue in Quaternary International on "Quantitative Land-Cover Reconstructions for China over the Past 6000 Years" wherein the editors, Xu et al, reveal how a range of the latest research on the topic "led to a large number of workshops and field work expeditions for studies of pollen productivity estimates. The aims of the special issue were to highlight the most recent pollen-based quantitative reconstructions of land-cover change in China covering the last 6,000 years (6 ka), to shed light on anthropogenic land-cover change (ALCC) since the start of agriculture and animal production, and to provide a context for understanding Holocene climate change in China under the combined effects of natural and anthropogenic land-cover change." > Access special issue

iii. Ice Core Early-Career Researchers Workshop (ICECReW)
The ICECReW workshop will be running for 1.5 days from 7-8 May 2023, and taking place before the US Ice Core Open Science Meeting. The next Summer School on Speleothem Science will be taking place from 7-13 August 2023 in São Paulo, Brazil. The event is particularly suited for MSc and PhD candidates, as well as selected early-career researchers, whose research interests are closely related to speleothem science. viii. Sea-level change in the past, present and future
The Geological Society Events, Climate, of the UK Geological Society, is organizing a meeting on "Sea level change in the past, present and future" in London and online, from 6-7 February 2023. This meeting is aimed at researchers and academics at any career stage with a general interest in paleo sea-level change. The two-day hybrid meeting will consist of a mixture of invited and submitted talks, and discussion/breakout sessions. The deadline for submitting abstracts is 10 December. > Calendar
